I used ABF once, where they bring a trailer to your house and you fill the front of it, then they put up a wall and use the rest of the space for commercial freight. it wasn't too bad, though I I became intimately acquainted with this stuff called "road dust". When I got a quote for my last move, it ended up being cheaper just to FedEx it all though.

I have no furniture - just a shitload of instruments and art supplies. I think it would fit in one large box that was about 6 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 5 feet high? It would be fairly heave (decent amount of books/amps), maybe around 700 pounds??
Anyone feel like sharing how much they moved and how much it costed them?

I always just sell my stuff and use the money to buy new stuff wherever I land. But instruments, I have experience moving guitars if you wanna know?
- I will sell all my furniture (not much to begin with) but instruments and art stuff that I am actually holding on to are things I am not willing to part with!grafiske

you're better off putting them in smaller separate boxes usually. they take dimensions and weight to calculate cost, so all in one may end up costing more, as well as being more likely to be damaged just by getting moved around a lot under its own weight.
I shipped 3 sound systems, turntables, 3 pcs, a bike, three small tables, clothes, kitchen stuff, about 1000 records, all total I think 30 boxes, all came in under $1000 with insurance and all.
- Good tip! I am hoping to do this for around 500. How much is insurance roughly?
grafiske - it was a per-box value i think. you get 500 for each, you just pay more if the value is higher, can't recall the rate thoughacescence
- Yeah, nobody's going to move a 5' box. Splitting it up is absolutely necessary.monospaced

Amtrak is the way to go. You bring the boxes to the station and they put it all on a palette and shrink wrap it. Very cheap too.
- Oooooh, I've heard of this. And it's good to arrive at the apt first and wait for shit to arrive slowly.monospaced

Go to your local music store and ask them to pack, or show you how to pack your instruments for travel. They usually have extra-correctly-shaped boxes from their own shipped orders laying around; if you're nice, you get 'em for free. Especially if they already know you.
I tend to talk my way onto airplanes with any instruments, since even with insurance I don't trust movers, and being a girl I get to use the 'helpless damsel' attitude to get my guitars stowed in the stewards' closets. But if you don't want to try that, I've also used FedEx Ground with no problems. Buy their insurance, but don't let them pack it; if you can't do it yourself, find someone who can! And I've also learned that if you don't have hard cases, don't ship. Strap those babies to you and carry them all the way.
Don't know anything about art supplies though. I once had paint explode in my suitcase and never tried again.

Shipped all my stuff via UPS and FedEx from CA to NY. Heavy boxes of books shipped at a lower rate because they weren't as fragile. My iMac was expensive because of the extra packaging. It's definitely cheaper than driving it across the country, and hell of a lot more convenient.

I did this about 6 years ago... I know there will be some cost differences because of time but it's an entertaining story nonetheless.
Bought a car in RI for $250 registered, it ran like crap and looked like crap but it ran... It was an 84 volvo station wagon. I insured it and loaded all my gear (snowboarding stuff, instruments, some small furniture, tv's, stereos, artwork, computers, everything that wasn't huuge) into the car and got a shipping quote for the vehicle. Worked out to be about $800, which was cheaper than gas and food all the way from RI to socal.
Shipped safely, door to door. And I donated the car to the Salvation Army and got a tax credit.
It's a little more 'down home' than most are willing to get into but hell it was pretty nice to have the car show up with everything and have them drop it at my front door...
