I have that lens and use is all the time. I also have the d90. one thing to remember is the d90 small frame turns it into what a fullframe camera would read as a 35mm.
still love it but wished I had got a full frame dslr.

You should be able to pick up an 18-70mm for very little, it's the kit lens for loads of crop sensor nikon bodies..
- best of bost worlds reallyrascuache
- sharp and cheap, but variable aperture will drive you nutsdanthon
- yeah I don't really use mine, am using my 50mm f/1.8 almost exclusivelyrascuache
- though I yearn for something as fast, but a little wider. Unfortunately I can't afford a wide prime :(rascuache
- 18-70 is a quality lens at a GREAT value. A little distortion, a little light fall-off, but solid shots for cheap.duckofrubber

Scratch the above, apparently this is better, and looks pretty damn cheap. It's ever so slightly slower than the 18-70 though.

The 20mm is nice, but not as sharp as the 24mm f2.8. Of course, the 24mm is not as wide as the 20mm, but if you're used to the 50mm, you might find the 24mm is wide enough. Walk into a camera shop and try them both on before you buy.
Also, Ken Rockwell isn't the worst reviewer out there, but he often praises or critiques products based on his needs instead of writing unbiased reviews.
- good points. particularly about how Ken Rockwell is very biased.sequoia

the nikon 24 is sweet... CRC close correction makes it waaay better than most zooms at less than 5 feet, except for the $2k zooms...
I prefer the 24 to the 20, but I shoot full-frame... 24, 35, 85 and 135 primes on a full-frame is prime nirvana...
you begin to see in 24mm once you get used to it.. for a crop-frame body, it's usable... 36mm equivelent for Nikon DX I think...

This is not a bad little tool if you're not familiar with focal lengths and field of view. However, it does NOT show the quality/sharpness of the glass.

beware, barrel distortion and perspective distortion are 2 different things... barrel distortion means you point the lens at a brick wall, perfectly flat aim, but you see a barrel-like shape, not a flat wall...
Perspective distortion is a creative tool or an annoying problem, depending on how good you are at working with a wide angle lens...
Wide angle lenses cause oddities like elongated heads in group photos for the people on the edges, that can be partially fixed by dxoptics and similar software...

a lot of people say primes improve your skills as they make you think more about composition.
Im a big fan of my 20mm prime (40mm equivalent), its a really nice perspective have a wide angle view, to me it feels like it puts the viewer right into the scene.
and from what ive heard almost all nikon lenses are incredible.
be sure to post some pics when you get it! :D
- yes, a wide prime gets you to think more about perspective.... learn to previsualize not just zoomvaxorcist
