Are they really necessary anymore? Do monitors really burn in like they used to?

LCDs suffer from image persistence, but it's not the same as phosphor burn on a CRT. LCDs can mostly return to their original state with time, whereas a CRT is physically damaged.

just an aesthetic thing now...fun to glance over at once in awhile....and there's useful ones like clock screensavers..........

On older LCD displays (non-LED) you can extend the life of your backlight by putting your whole monitor to sleep/off when it's not in use.

i used to use ffffound screen saver but it stop working :( it's nice too look at random cool images.

theres more uses than just preventing a screen burn i think. it's really a neat idea to have your screen turn to something else when you don't use it, so why not? also companies like Tha Ltd are doin stuff like http://www.scr.sc
