...does anybody know how to standardize a window in the finder? Make the columns a certain width, always show the window's contents in list format, etc? It's always so !#$@#%!^%$# random...

Finder > Preferences
and
View > Show View Options

option-drag the column to the width you want and it'll remember that setting.
you can also change the default view finder-wide via terminal:
sudo defaults write com.apple.finder AlwaysOpenInColumnView True
change Column to List or Icon

I have found that, after a reboot of the Mac or restart of Finder, the first Finder window I open will have default settings. But if I immediately close that window and open a new Finder window, it will be back to my 'remembered' settings. But then again, I'm still on 10.4, so that behavior may be different by 10.6.

I think there's also a permissions thing happening- to set a full system-wide default, not just the folders in your home directory, requires that you log in as the root user for it to be remembered after reboot. that's what "sudo" does in my post above.

Well, to clarify, my view stays in Column mode. It's just that the column widths are reset to default until I close and open a new Finder window.

Useful list of shortcuts http://www.danrodney.com/mac/
Holding option while mousing over a name and double clicking resize widget look useful.

I never knew you could change the background colour of finder windows. My day is now complete. Fuck voting.
