Hi everyone,
Well I've been doing print design for almost 10 years. I love what I do ups and downs I've been constant striving for the best. However, I also love restaurants, the food, meeting people, the process of getting everything together and putting it on a table, experimenting, the noises of people chatting in the background etc etc.
I've dealt with restaurants before, but today I was offer a manager position for a restaurant that is about to open. The owner is a current client for whom I've designed a lot restaurant related projects. The money is good and since my ultimate goal is opening a restaurant, I believe it will be a good starting point to gain experience.
Of course I will still do a lot of freelance, but I will have to leave my part-time job as an art director.
What would you do in my shoes?
Thanks for your time.. guys

It sounds like you've already made up your mind and are looking for validation...? If that is the case, let me be the first to do so: this is the job that you want, and nothing holds you back except for fear. go for it!

I'd go for it! Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that jazz!

if you're excited about the restaurant, do it but make sure to keep one foot in the design pool

You guys are good are interpreting my thoughts. It's not that I've decided to go for it already. It's just that QBN is a go way to filter your thoughts, even-though some of you are crazy as F%$^*( which is cool sometimes... thank you guys... I'll let you know my final decision..

I've been working in restaurant kitchens for the past 7-8 years and love it to death. There's definitely a lot of appeal for the restaurant culture. I don't see why you cant do both...I recently took a full time sous chef job after struggling to find a consistent and reliable full time designer position. I'm now currently rebranding 4 restaurants (including the one i work in) across the board; menu's, collateral, logo, web, etc etc... Its exhausting and my fingers and wrists are screaming at me to stop, but honestly, its perfect. I finally realized that i should stop doing what other people think i should be doing and doing what I think i should be doing. no regrets.
*plus I get to play restuarant owner with someone else's money until I open my own :)- haha great way to see things man...
im on the same train... thanks..hektor911

If I had even a smidgen of experience with the restaurant industry I would love to do the same, I say go for it. With your print design skills you've always got something to fall back on if it doesn't work out.
You'd hate to not take it and think 'what if....' for the rest of your life...

lets all change careers... lol

Do it.

I used to manage a restaurant then I switched to design. I would say go for it. I just would not count on a lot of time for design and freelance. Managing a new restaurant is a 24/7 ordeal.

do it and take freelance stuff when you want if you want.
