i love adobe illy.. i hate the rest of the garbage they spew out

...the slow reaction when working with text
- < its meant as an illustrative tool... for massive type I believe you want InDesign.Knuckleberry

I love Illy - though I'll be first in line, suggesting Adobe need competition. It's Photoshop that's gone down the tubes for me - I can't think of any worthwhile additions to the series since they cleaned up the kerning fuck up around version 5 or so.
As much as I lathe CorelDraw though, I wish Illy had some of its features... Preflight print check, object details clearly labelled in the layers menu, closer text inputs for rotations and such - and, is it just me, or is the bitmap handling a bit better (as in features, certainly not as in speed, God, CD is slow) in CorelDraw? Whatever, it's a fucking dog of a program otherwise.
- Yah, I'd love to lathe Corel Draw. As it is, I just loathe it.detritus
- actually you are next in line after me.. as i strictly only use illy for everything..e-pill
- i used to love Macromedia Freehand as it had the legendary Z axis..e-pill
- Have you not made use of the content aware fill options? SO good for extending the background of an image, so you don't have type going over the subject's face!Projectile

...taking minutes to save

Sounds like you need a new computer more than new software, pascii.

At first I was going to give you shit for hating on one of my all-time favorite apps, but now I'm going to have to go ahead and join the club on a temporary basis. Illustrator, on deeper inspection, does kinda drag these days. My computer is only two years old and Illustrator feels like it's maxing out its capabilities sometimes. Yes, saving files takes awhile, and I quitting the application can take minutes at a time.
I'm sick the clipped out areas of images get selected on accident and how type isn't handled as elegantly as InDesign. I love InDesign, and I find myself doing most of my work in it just to avoid Illy and PS as much as possible. Ugh.

Actually, on the speed basis - I was doing a project a couple of years back that ended up creating one of the most complex (in terms of Illy filter, etc) I've ever done. Slogged like a bitch on my old Pentium4 machine.
When I upgraded to my shiny i7 with 12gb of RAM late last year, that document was one of the first files I opened.
Very little difference in render speed - panning around the document took pretty much just as long to redraw as it did on my old machine. Everything else was lighting quick, just not Illy.
I'm glad I don't have to revisit that project.
Now I find that they've cloistered themselves with nVidia and CUDA, so any future GPU-based speed increases across the Adobe range are going to be invisible to ATI users. Wonderful. Not that this matters in Illy - there're no GPU tweaks in there, afaik.
Competition needed, Adobe. Time to move with the times.
- Well ... there's always Corel Draw ... *snicker*Continuity

The more I respond to this thread, the less I like Adobe.

i don't see what the fuss about illustrator not handling large amounts of type that well is. It's not a word processing app.... and in that respect neither is InDesign. They're design tools meant to compose type and image; not allow you to type up your dissertation in them.
That being said... yes. Type handling does suck in illustrator. A few other things that utterly annoy me and perplex me. Layers - why in gods name would I ever want a YELLOW layer that gives all items YELLOW edges.
Smart guides can still be problematic, snapping to seemingly random places and/or not being precise...
There are others but on a whole, i think Illy is great. I'd rather have it as a tool than not.

Smart Guides are my saviour - I think I get 'most' of their logic now (I know to snap on top of a target, rather than coyloy parading it nearby, for instance) - but they've allowed me to forego going full CAD for the technical-type layouts I increasingly find myself doing.

I only go to illustrator when I have to illustrate something nowadays, otherwise it's Indesign all the way. I would have joined the "I love Indesign" Club.
- 100%. And yes, InDesign IS meant to handle large amounts of type, BETTER than a word processor.monospaced

For some reason it takes longer to launch and quit than photoshop does. but beyond that illy is smoooooth for me

What Illy needs:
Restore or recover feature like in InDesign, when Illy crashes, kiss your work goodbye. So you have to constantly save, save save!
- pascii0
why are all layers OPEN when i open the document? aargh

I hate illustrator and illustrator hates me. It's the only agreement that we've come to.
