any front end designers with jQuery here... how long did it take you to learn it? i've dabbled with it but the back end people here do most the work, I'm looking at learning properly now.. just wondering if anyone's learnt it properly,
did you just learn using online tutorials?

i learned it from extensively looking at the api docs online when trying to do something with it. i feel like that's the best way - instead of trying to do tutorials, trying to do the actual work i need to do, and looking up how to do it each time.

Sometimes checking tutorials on how to implement an effect can help - otherwise the docs on jquery.com are all you need.
Keep dabbling :)

i tend to go to
http://flowplayer.org/tools/indeā¦
and start with one of the standalone demos that is closest to what I'm after and then fiddle with it to try and get it to do what I want. when it doesn't work I ask for help here!

Aye, it's a very dabble-friendly format.
Almost makes me excited to do slogwork on web projects again.
Play.

Ya, the documentation is great. Spend time reading them just to get a sense of what's there and when you start building things you'll have a better idea of what you can do in one line of code versus many. I know I've learned of a super-helpful method only after I hacked my own solution together.

I set up a folder with individual jquery plugins that I have seen with the downloaded the code , I replace all elements with my own and begin tweeking the code and commenting on how each modification changes the outcome
with all my folders in place , I can easily go back and revisit any specific jquery functionality I need and grab the code as needed
great book I recommend is Javascript and AJAX by PeachPit Press
I went through the whole book as I was scanning jquery code
best to know how to read/write it raw (javascript) , so when you see a new plugin or snippet you are not so unfamiliar with what is happening
- and there is no timetable to how long it takes, all comes down to what you want to knowBattleAxe
