Display calibration

I've never done this, always just used things as they come. I'm becoming more aware of the technical side of things though. I have a MBP and will be getting a screen. Firstly, how do you calibrate the laptop screen, and then with the monitor? I see the system prefs / displays option is colour LCD / custom, but it seems a pretty poor option [custom]?

system pref > displays > color > Calibrate?

One of those things I've always wanted to buy, but never wanted to spend $100 on.

If you're serious about it, get something like the above (there are loads to choose from).
They're well worth the spend if you're serious about it. I've used a Huey Pro which was pretty good, you can leave it plugged in to the machine all the time, and it'll sit in in a little cradle and measure ambient light, and adjust your screen to display consistently given the lighting conditions.

its funny that designers dont really do proper calibration yet when the prints come back looking different than the monitor they get the panties in a bunch.

These guys have the best calibration software and hardware out there. I've worked and known these guys for over 15 years.
