They are also used for digital coupons in Japan.

Examples of what? Application or implementation?

When you're thinking about uses for QR codes - it's probably worth remembering that all they really are, is a way to store data.
This info is quite useful:

Application for the most part, but I'd be curious about any implementation stories.

It's only really been well used in Japanese campaigns because its standard in their phones. In the west the idea is confusing and pointless to the general public.

You can read QR codes on most phones with cameras:

i did so many QR codes for that campaign that i ended up putting a generator on my homepage
(third column)
just paste a URL in there and hit enter

Phones in asia have it pre-installed. Facebook and google are developing more using qr. It is only a matter of time.

Ideally, I think camera phones need to automatically recognise these codes when a user takes a regular photo .. it would be great if that happened by default, and it was a seamless experience.

There are subway/bus metro systems around the world that are using qr codes to interact with schedule information.

I had some qr code stickers printed last year and plastered them all over my city. Funny thing is not many people in America have any idea what they are. So most of them stayed up. If you never saw one before it has sort of an official look to it. It doesn't look like vandalism.

this year at SXSW the badges had QR codes on them. You could scan them into your phone to keep contact info and also see that persons schedule. Pretty neat.
