Here's a question. I realise there'll be lovers / haters of both.
A new MBP 15" with high res anti glare, 8gb ram, 500gb HD 7200, i7, on education is £1937. A saving of 15%.A Sony Vaio the same spec except 16.5" screen, same res, + 640GB HD, is £1300.
I realise the Vaio isn't quite as pretty as the MBP, and the OS perhaps not quite as smooth to use, but I'm close to getting the Sony. I'd like to hear peoples thoughts incase I've missed something!

It's really just an OS difference, then. Whatever you prefer to work in.

well that's a lot of money of difference, if you are used to Windows then the Sony is your best choice
- Atkinson0
I've used both - I have a MBP at present but don't have a problem using windows or OS. I guess it's down to looks / size but I can't decide
- cramdesign0
Why choose? Just get both.

The screen size isn't necessarily a plus point. I have 16" and 13" laptops and pretty much always find myself on my 13" simply for it's portability.
I've never owned a Mac but 600quid more for inferior (on paper anyway) hardware seems ridiculous. Unless you're completely Windows go for the Vaio.
The fact you're asking Windows or Mac would imply you're easy-going on which OS you'd be using, so it'd really just come down to spec.
If you're comfortable with Windows 7, get the Vaio and spend the remaining 600 on something else. Maybe, to show you're not neglecting Apple, buy an iPad with the leftovers?
- to show you're not neglecting Apple ... aww ;) "I love you both the same, honest I do"lukus_W

Normally I wouldn't comment, but after a day of dealing with IE bugs in an application my company is launching, I'll just say, fuck Windows, Microsoft and the horse it rode in on.
- Uhhhh. Anyone can run pretty much any browser on either OS, though.monospaced
- Microsoft only get a small portion of the Vaio money though right, from the OS install?orrinward

I like both but have only switched to Mac last year. Windows does have a real problem of getting super slow after a few months, even after using tools like CCleaner. So far I think MacOSX's UI is a bit more responsive, but the browser (either Safari or FF) is slower. I'm not crazy about where the Command key is located on a Mac. I still like using my pinky to hit control on the PC's keyboard a lot better. I use a keyboard shortcut for everything, so being able to use my pinky helped me extend my fingers across the keyboard. On MacOSX, it's like trying to play twister with your fingers. It's also nice that I don't have to worry about viruses on a Mac.
Personally, I'd spend the extra loot and go with the Mac.
- Safari is one of the fastest browsers on any platform, no?monospaced
- oh, and you use your thumb for the command key (where Alt is) for those functionsmonospaced
- no twister necessary, and I'm saying this because I use both all daymonospaced
- Yeah, I know its a thumb on Mac but I'm saying I like the pinky (PC) better. It feels more natural to always use my index finger to click on things.fyoucher1
- ... click on things. On a Mac, since you use your thumb, sometimes you're forced to use your pinky to clickfyoucher1
- Oh man, I'm sorry. I have two hands and I take it for granted.monospaced
- LOL. Yeah, forgot to mention that I only have one hand.fyoucher1

normally i would say the vaio, but you have to consider that the vaio is mostly plastic with a magnesium alloy frame, and the mac has a solid machined aluminum body (which explains, in part, the price difference). it depends on how rough you are with your kit...in the long run, the mac will be much less likely to develop stress cracks. I have seen that happen with vaios, and sony has been less than eager to fix them.
what model vaio? that might help.

At the end of the day, the $ difference really isn't that much. You'll be using this thing every day for a couple years - get what you want, you'll be happier in the end.

it's funny the criteria some people use when choosing a platform.
i have to use both because of the nature of my work. i enjoy both platforms and both have their problems and perks. i use my mac with windows xp loaded more because it fits my workflow better and because i can do more with the os given my years of experience with it. it also has a lot more 3rd party support, which i realize will change over the years for apple.
basically, choose the platform that will fit your needs in the long term. your work or use of the computer should dictate that for you.

get the mac, max the ram via crucial. up the HD to 7200 and install windows.
if you want a plastic computer go to the kids section at toys r us and pick one up for $29.99.
- does $29.99 get you bluetooth?prophet
- no, that's five dollars extra.akrokdesign

if youre indifferent between OS's, id say got for OS X.
i prefer windows myself, works fine for me, but OS X is more reliable.

Become a freetard and run linux!

^i think in in 9 years on windows ive had 1 virus, but i agree macs are safer virus wise.
- SteveJobs0
just a heads up, the virus/security argument won't hold water for too much longer. there is nothing inherintly safe about the mac os. it's just that there hasn't been as much 3rd party support or as much market penetration as windows.
over the next few years you're going to see a lot more security holes and exploits as apple joins the mainstream ranks with microsoft. bored thirteen year-olds are going to start polishing their hax0ring skills for the mac and the exact same problems are going to exist on the mac.
but in the words of the great levar burton, you don't have to take my word for it.
- well, that might happen, in the Windows world is already happening and it's a messernexbcn

@ SteveJobs
I swear, I've heard that exact argument for years now. But still, after a decade of Apple gaining share, there still aren't any vicious viruses.
- SteveJobs0
^ of course not yet. it really won't happen until they start encouraging developers to start developing for the mac. most cocoa devs are trying to profit on their mobile platforms right now, so there *still* isn't much 3rd party software for the platform yet.
- monospaced0
^ That's what they said 10 years ago too. But still, nothing.
- huh? the ipod/iphone sdk didn't exist back thenSteveJobs
- also, i'm not "they". i haven't been saying this for years. i'm saying it now.SteveJobs
- When OS X came out and Apple made its first "threat" there were promises that viruses would be rampant within a few yearsmonospaced
- years...but despite new devices, platforms, web servers, everything, there are STILL none.monospaced
- UNIX kernel rocks...very secure and almost impossible to crash with a virusmonospaced
- cool story, but again, i'm not "they"SteveJobs
- sorry, I know you're not they, didn't mean to attack...I'm just trying to have a healthy conversationmonospaced
