What's the best VJ Software around?
Any good free alternatives?

There are loads of good free programmes that you can use for VJing .. but what do you actually want to show? How are you going to control what you show? What operating system do you use? How technically minded are you?
You need to think about all this and do some research. Your question is far too vague.

using osx, quite technically minded, no experience in vj-ing yet.
I actually wanted to start toying around a bit, very basic.

There are lots of VJing applications out there for mac, here are some that I have tried..
Modul 8: http://www.modul8.ch/
VDMX5: http://www.vidvox.net/and of course Resolume Avenue listed above: http://www.resolume.com/

I reckon there's so much scope for experimentation with VJing .. it's probably worth developing your own workflows and techniques - rather than using one 'VJ' application.
Not sure if these links will be useful - but should give you some stuff to play around with.
These can be used for live coding, or producing generative visuals from sound etc:

"FreeFrame provides a framework for developing video effects plugins and hosts on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. Sample code is provided which compiles in Delphi, MSVC, GCC, Project Builder and Kylix.
The plugins are initially intended for use in VJ ('Visual Jockey') applications. The project was initiated by developers from VJamm, Resolume and EffecTV. Some great plugins have been written. Freeframe support is now available in a large number of video applications."

it used to be... a decade ago... you could cheat the vjamm demo by creating video clips of the same dimensions and naming system then replacing those clips with your own. granted it's lo-fi, but it worked, it may have just been file name too so even easier to experiment with the demo
