locustsloth is bang on the money..my kids loved barnyard dance (any of the Boynton books is good though)
but for my money, the Leslie Patricelli books are by far the best i've seen, and my kids absolutely wore them out....

Some Thomas Trains! My 2 year old LOVES these. They're the one toy that's been his constant favorite for quite some time. Very durable, and you don't need the buy the tracks (you can later, though.).
I would go with ones on this page, as they are not the talking, battery-operated ones.
