You can contact bands on MySpace - the ancient social networking site that revolutionized the music industry back in the day...

wouldve thought they would be a community online or something... talking producing stuff that would be quality that would get onto mtv etc...

the really good creative stuff will never come from community sites.
From my point of view crowd-sourcing creativity = lame.Like bored2death said, try and see a band you like or would like to shoot a video for playing live, and just approach them.

actually meeting real musicians.... go to shows, listen, talk to people, getting that feeling of knowing if you'd get along well or not has to be in person sometimes....

This would be cool to try pitching and possibly actually get work ...

... but as vaxorcist said nothing beats networking and just hooking up with real bands. Get a reel and portfolio and hit the scene . I 'work' in the music industry and just showing up at shows and introducing myself and talking with people is half the battle. Cold emails are alright so long as you're honest and not looking for too much at first and they basically know who you are so you could introduce yourself in person eventually. I've had at least 5 offers or various projects on myspace just by creating a decent and relevant friend list and shooting the shit with them
- i think radar is exactly what you have in mind actuallyeieio

Making friends with the people you want to make videos for is gonna be your best bet by a long shot...

People want stuff for free all the time. So it should be a breeze finding bands that want a free video. It's when you are ready to start making money of your craft that you will see problems... especially since people like you in a way create the strange market where people expect something for nothing.
So it's catch-22: you undermine the business because you need something for your reel, but when you do get something on your reel there isn't much business left...
