2010 is the year boys/girls...
Engagement for myself & the ol' lady...
So here's the next step; I have a 1.85-ish caret diamond from my girls grandmother for use in a new ring of my design as well as her mothers old ring with 16 smaller diamonds in it.
What I need help with is starting that process...
Any jewelry designers you cats know of who specialize in this area of design? Examples of rings you have seen over time? Examples of your own rings? Canada/Ontario/Toronto is ideal but North America & the world would suffice if the quality/design was just right!
Thank you in advance for useful (and useless but hilarious) information of all forms. I will surely http://www.sadtrombone.com/ anything I deem appropriate and please, don't http://www.sadtrombone.com/ this initial post...
Much love and wish me luck you pretentious bastards!

Congrads! My friend just got married not to long ago and had the whole setting of her ring made to look like a Tacori setting she had loved with a little exra. He used a place called Zachary's in MD. I know that's a little far from the Canada side but LOVE their work.

I think Niwaka will put your stone in a setting for a reduced price. http://www.niwaka.com/

wait.. you're going to pay someone else to push diamonds into your fiance's ring??
Something is very, very wrong with this.

Put the ring out to tender.
Ask 30 jewelers to spend lots of time and money pitching their ideas to you.
When you get one, ask if they can take the 1.85 carat diamond and make it bigger.
Also once its made and looking all gold and lovely , thats when you ask to see it in platinum or something different.
You're going to be the client for a change, so be a complete knob about it and try blag as much as you can just like clients do in your day to day work :)- Ring creation WITH A VENGEANCE!!! I dig the client reversal but am too moral a man to do so... ; )ideaist

What about approaching any local art colleges?
You might be able to get a student who's work you liked to do something a lot cheaper (and prob a lot more creative) than any commercial jeweler.
you also might end up with a ring from the potential next big name in jewelery.- Yeah; I went to Ontario College of Art & Design and think this is a viable route...ideaist

ideaist - how did this go, eh? what did you end up getting made?

Yo bigtrickagain! Glad you asked! Actually ended up going with this James cat @ http://www.metamorphosisjeweller… . He runs his office/showroom out of a century home on bllor east in Toronto, ON.
We've gone through some wax designs and the ring should be made now! It will be focused around a 6.8 carat diamond so i'm soiling myself in anticipation to see the final; I will post a pick when it's all done!
I may propose VIA iPad on her birthday... ; )... Like a "will you marry me" simple (non-flash based) form with appropriate responses to whatever her choice is... + I can justify buying an iPad... haha...

- With wedding band will appear similar to that; a lil' more art nouveau influence!ideaist

Awesome - James looks like a talented mufugga. I had similar ideas to making a custom engagement ring for my girl - ended up taking a couple of jewelry-making classes - but it seems like I have a *long* way to go before I can actually make something that doesn't look amateurish.
Look forward to seeing the pix! Haha an Ipad proposal... are you going to make it an app?
- It's the first time i'm a client and i'm letting this dude know what I want; it's refreshing/empowerin...ideaist
- ...but (like when people work with me) I give him feedback and always trust his opinion as he knows best...ideaist
- I think it's the fact that I respect his craft too much to try my hand at it... he's bee doing it for like 35 years!ideaist

Wait what the fuck? 6.8 carat diamond? Are you mob-connected, or just the scion of a wealthy coal-mining family?
- OSFA0
the bigger the diamond, the shorter the marriage.
Congrats btw! haha.
