Lately I've been using flash because of the ability to use certain full scale image functions that are not easily supported cross browser (not to mention smooth page transitions). I've built 2 (working on 3rd) since the 'no flash' announcement on the ipad. I've told them all up front that sites will not work on ipad and they've all been very cool. I'm not sure if it's because they find the ipad device irrelevant to their business (all 3 are L.A. based fashion brands) or they are really happy with my work and don't mind the compromise. It's still early in the game but I'm saying Adobe:1, Ipad:0.

to get ahead of the pack here, if you want to develop for the ipad or iphone don't use flash. if you're developing for general browsers use flash or don't. i struggle with the need for people to create some competition for this obvious fact? next we'll have a fucking pc vs mac debate. then ford vs holden, batman vs. superman, blah fucking blah. i still find it crazy that i can't use HD footage for a clients radio advert. fucking technology.
- Clearly Superman FTWETM
- Totally, superman would kick batman's ass every timeharmsie
- Holden use Flash on their site.boobs
- actually in all the fights between batman and superman, batman wins.e-pill
- batman has a utility belt filled with kryptonite rings, bullets and shards just for kicking asse-pill
- it was also superman that gave batman, lex luthors kryptonite ring.. his mistake.e-pill
- batman wins every time.e-pill

What Jobs is doing isn't going to kill Flash overnight. He's probably hoping that by running around yelling "Flash sucks" it will force most big companies to reevaluate their sites and either drop Flash or make sure there is a non Flash fall back if they want to reach his customers. I mean, let's face it aside from video, there are very few highly trafficked sites where Flash is an essential part of the user experience.
It also encourages the dev community to start accelerating their efforts to make JS and HTML5 implementations better. At some point, the standards based stuff will catch up with Flash, and the browser issues will be worked out, in the meantime have fun using a dying technology:D
- I'm JK, I like Flash and Adobe products, but I do think it will be gone someday.ukit

The bottom line is we are talking about a shift to a new technology that isn't completely developed or supported yet, so making these comparisons right now is pointless. Check back in a couple years and I guarantee things will look pretty different.

from a user point of view, you get nothing new... so, they don't give a fuck....
What's next? All the developers out there re-creating stuff that was done in Flash 10 years ago in HTML 5 and blogging about it.

ephix, what the fuck are you talking about? yeah flash will soon be able to export to apps that will play within the iphone and ipad framework but we're talking websites here. jesus, if you're going to jump in have a clue. hahaha. like that's stopped anyone here.

hmm hands up if you have an ipad, if you do, congrats you have a large iphone! ....turns on computer, starts internet, plays some random viral flash game, watches bbc iplayer and drinks a nice cuppa tea whilst reading an email his mate sent with some girls flashing their gigantic breasts...smiles contently :)

Before it was released, no one cared about producing websites that would work on the iPhone.
Therefore, it probably stands to reason that a lot of people are going to have a hard time understanding why their site will need to be functional on the iPad.
While we might not know specifics about the device .. we do know that a Flash site is not going to be functional on the iPad.
It's the job of the developer to educate the client and let them know why their site _is_ going to need to work on the iPad; especially if they work in fashion retail.
Producing a Flash site for such a client is similar to leading them down a dead end street, imo.

Oh shit all 3 of your clients don't care about the iPad?

How wil I watch porn on an iPad? Surely thats its USP - nice little screen to take to bed with me.

Flash is entrenched and has legitimate uses therefore isn't going away. End of thread.

Nice post on mac rumours...
What drives the Internet? Advertising.
What technology does advertising currently use? Flash.
Who's going to buy iPads? Young, affluent, fashionable, extrovert people.
Who's going to buy netbooks? Nerdy introverts.
Which of these audiences do the advertisers want to reach? The iPad users.
So what are advertisers going to do? Shouldn't be too difficult to work out.
As usual, follow the money.

@must_dash: we don't really know what the demographics for the ipad is but I'm buying one for my grandmother so that throws 'young and fashionable' out the window.
I think the point is unless you're building a site where users will be returning a daily, weekly, or bi weekly basis than you probably SHOULD consider a non flash site.
I would presume ipad users will have a second computer. If your site is to intended to be accessible on the internet than flash is still a worthy conisderation.- Your gran may not want to see some flashy flash site eithermust_dash

Every meeting I've had this year, the client has said they'd prefer not to use Flash.
