It's totally an ok thing to do as long as...
- you are in a city or location that actually has more work to offer.
- you have a good portfolio and network of references to get another job or freelance.

life is too short, quit your job.
I've done it 2 years ago, for sure money was missing some time, but I have never had some many job opportunities and met so many people.I just quit my job 1 week ago in the exact same conditions, setting my portfolio and soon ready to find money !

Find your dream, take action to reach it. The universe will conspire to help you and the 'how' will show up when it needs to. Be aware of the opportunities.
I quit in 08. I've had one amazing adventure after the next, because I decided thats what I want, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.
Create your own destiny.
We all exist where we are now because of the decisions and actions we've made since the begining, that have brought us to the present. If you feel you want something different, start making different decisions and taking action to bring it closer.
Just my thoughts. A lot of people told me what I was doing was madness... "I would NEVER do that" etc.
I stayed positive, stayed focused and did it anyway. Never looked back.
Best wishes

I did this last June. I am making, granted it is hard at times, but that is the freelance way, not constant check. I had a non design/photography related job, it killed my mojo big time. Working 50 hours a week + freelance gigs. I was easily pushing about 14 hours days, plus weekends. I did this on and off for 4 years.
If you can, stay until you land a job. I think it will be an easier transition and it's truly the smarter thing to do. Use that "negative" energy to propel you forward into a direction you want. It really comes down to piece of mind.
I don't think a paycheck vs no paycheck it is worth it. Egos aside, of course. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) Land a job, get the fuck out.

Sept last year i decided to do this. I was at a company that was losing its main client. I also decided to break up with my girlfriend, who I lived with, a month before I quit. I was basically losing my mind, so I quit my job, went home for a bit to cool off and then came back to the city and started freelancing. I've wanted to be a freelancer for the longest time. Everything this working out pretrty damn well. I started working the same day I got back to the city and haven't had a day off since. Good thing.

I've done it twice in my life and both times had jobs less than 2 months later with nearly doubled the previous salary and the new work was cake compared to the bullshit I was putting up with.
That said, both times I felt incredibly lucky, and had quit out of absolute desperation.

don't do it until you have another thing, this is a rule I learned the hard way...

I am all for quitting when you have not found anything else.
But... if you have a family stay put till you get something else. Thats what I am doing.
If you don't have a family get yourself "let go" then you can get unemployment.

Just be sure you can survive without work, period; in the process of building your dreams, you may get hungry, but in the end you'll make out. The old chestnut, "don't burn bridges", is applicable here. Regardless of your decision, take the high road, give proper notification and if you gotta go, you gotta go.

Your just burnt out man. Take a week off, go light a fatty and watch Seinfeld. If you still feel like nothing has changed then send out 10 resumes to companys and quit.

its funny, your boss is probably reading this right now....

Will you really be happier somewhere else? There's a ~50% chance your new job will suck worse than the current one, though likely for different reasons.
Frankly, it's probably easier to alter a current job than it is to quit and find the perfect one. Finding quality people is a nightmare, even now with "the way the economy is". That puts you in a strong position to affect change. If that doesn't work you can always move on, but at least you tried to make it work.
- This is a lame attitude. Some jobs are just plain terrible. There's no workaround to malicious/shitty management.bort
- Okay, lame is a little strong. But it sounds like you've never worked in a truly horrible company. Believe me, sometimes the only solution is escape.bort
- Well, if you unhappy, take control of your life, make a controlled "pull of the pin" and adios...DoktorDavid
- *if you are*DoktorDavid
- it does depend on company size and your role. Large structural problems are going to tough to overcome.monNom

^ point being: You need to design your life to best suit you. Nobody will do it for you. You can hope the next job is better, or you can work to improve your current situation. You have a lot more control in an existing job.
