Pretty unknown to me to be honest, the US push into the Japanese territories, i learnt the European stuff at school... loving the history lesson.

Awesome cinematography already, great scene with the Japanese guy in the river...

Really good so far, has a bit of the "Thin Red Line" feel to it. at least this GuadalCanal part.

Yep, a couple really nice scenes were they don't muddle the character interactions with dialog.Mimio2/2

I liked the fact that they jump right into the action in the first episode. In Band of Brothers there was that whole training phase.

I don't have HBO. :( Will wait for the box set.

My grandfather earned a Purple Heart in the 3rd Marine Division at Iwo Jima; he also fought at Guam and Bouganville. Pacific history is very interesting to me, so I cannot wait to see this show once it's out on DVD.

    • this is a must buy for you then. the interviews at the beginning are just like BoB. It pulls you into the history of it.zenmasterfoo1/2

Not enough real wars going on around the world, I guess I will settle for an HBO drama.

It's exactly like Band Of Brothers (which is beyond awesome btw) and even has some of the same actors and same title treatments. The first episode was good but I honestly expected more, maybe it's because I just wanted more. Can't wait for the second though.

If you liked Saving Private Ryan, you'll probably like this show. Tom Hanks even does VO (maybe even is a part of the production???)

    • are you serious? toms hanks was an executive producer for band of brothers and the pacificrefunktion1/2

Well, if you lived they all got medals, sorta' like little league baseball kids that suck today. Everyone get's a prize!

@mg33 "My grandfather earned a Purple Heart in the 3rd Marine Division at Iwo Jima..."

Wow. My uncle was in the same division at Iwo Jima...weird.

    • Interesting. Was he also at Bouganville and Guam? My grandfather's name was William Ezra Gallegly.mg33

My grandfather was on the USS Tennessee as a Turret Capt. when it was hit in Pearl harbor. He's 94 and still alive, living by himself in California.
Last year my sisters interviewed him on camera about all his war stories and edited it with some news footage from back then and gave everyone in our family a DVD copy of it.
He doesn't really like talking about it but we convinced him to do it.

He's a pretty modest man and hates the fact that the few survivors get together each year. "Why the hell would I want to remember that day, fact is most these men where hiding and crying somewhere while others laid dying" he says.

yeah he's a pretty tough cookie, he's getting to old to live by himself but he sure is hell aint going into a home.fooler22/3

That show could get quite brutal if they wanted to show it.

My father flew B-17's in WWII but was in the European theater. He's passed away now, but it's true. None of these guys liked to talk about their roles in the war. He told me anecdotes, but no real 'meaty' stories. What he did tell me however, was extremely interesting. He flew 13 missions before the war ended, was shot down behind enemy lines and escaped twice, and liberated a concentration camp, flying survivors back to England at the end of the war.

    Rest in peace Dad

I never met my wives grandfather but he was shot down in a B17 too.
The military sent a letter to his wife (whom is still living to this day) telling her that his plane was missing and all were presumed dead.
He was the guy in the bottom ball turret and when they made their crash landing was still in it. After a few weeks or months she received another letter saying he survived but was seriously injured. He made a full recovery and the only thing you could tell he was in a plane crash was he was missing part of an ear.

    • he never asked or received a purple heart until after he died of natural causes in the 80sfooler2
