I really liked this film. I don't quite see what the awards hype is all about, it didn't seem very revolutionary but all the same I really enjoyed it. I thought that the characters were very well developed and the cinematography was beautiful. I got to watch it with my brother who was an Air Force EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) until 2007, so it was really interesting in that regard too.

it was ok. some good things in it. i kept feeling like it was kind of routine, you know? he was crazy, his partners were afraid of him but had grudging respect...he was tortured....like i had seen it before, at least the story. he went home, it was drudge shopping for cereal, etc....
i mean, its not like i was in war...but it felt a little by the numbers...
- i know what you mean. i think the pacing of the story let your mind wander sometimes.SteveJobs

Had to do charades in class today as a lesson in concentration on self as well as others during presentations rather than just others. And communicating without words.
I had to act out "The Hurt Locker".
F my life.

The sentimental bullshit at the end really wrecked it for me.

dudes, it's a movie. It's not supposed to be accurate just as the best war movie ever Apocalypse Now is not at all accurate.. or maybe it was :/
- prophet0NE0
someone mentioned Near Dark. awesome flick. the bar scene is epic.
- Point50
While the movie does a decent job of providing plenty of suspense the clichéd I'm-a-wreckless-badass attitude that the main character had to portray was just boring and overplayed (possible really just overwritten). The plot was pretty thin and I felt like I was watching one of the many canned TV shows that exist today; antag + protag + personal history = generic story all wrapped up in a current events shell. I really don't get what the Oscar hype is all about for this flick.

so, are you suggesting that it's... a bomb?
- BoneCrusher0
The ending wasn't sentimental at all, unless you're a fucking moron that can't decipher subtext.
Will hated it back home. Don't you get it? He chose to go back because he hated his life, his baby, his wife. He'd rather risk killing himself than trudge around a supermarket. That's about as unsentimental as it gets.

It was good, I know some people like that....but good movie. War does crazy shit to peeps.

p.s. Point5 the movie wasn't about plot, it was a character study, and a damn fine one.
Go back to Avatar you slack jawed idiots.
- +1. Fucking exactly.Khurram
- BoneCrusher.. I Disagree. I'd rather have Anne Colutre fuck me in the ass with Michael Moore's Dead dick then watch this shit.Naygon
- this shit.Naygon
- Only because Character studies don't mean jack all when it's made up. Source Grizzly Man for an actual character studyNaygon
- I totally agree .. it was a character study - and to an extent examined personal motivation.lukus_W

^ It is a compelling character study. I'm never quite sure what to make of him. For one, he's not an adrenalin junky. He does his job so "matter of factly", without bravado. For two, he IS emotionally effected by it, disturbed and saddened, i.e. the little boy bomb, and the d00d from whom he cannot remove the suicide belt and he screams "i'm sorry!" and runs. It's not like he's a cold-hearted machine.
I think here, without getting too all Newsnight Review about it, you have to reflect on what sort of personality would actually do this kind of job. Cos IED's and suicide bombs etc, is all we really hear about the Iraq war, and thats was the overriding experience of the war in Iraq (not so much in Afghanistan). And i found it compelling to have to journey through THAT experience through the eyes/mind of a guy like him. And be all like "yeah, i've done 863 bombs, it's mundane and routine," like you're numb. But then it's like "holy fuck! This is insanity!"
I think the clear parallel is the bomb disposal guy at the beginning, who gets wasted. He's cautious. He's wary. He' "by-the-book" professional. And ultimately, it's meaningless. He's dead anyway. And then you're taken on this journey with the character whose all let "well fuck it, we're all gonna die anyway." And i felt like emotionally giving in to him and his "way" and at the same time, "no wait! self-preservation!"
And the ending is fantastic.Cos it is the real rhythm of the lives of these soldiers. They do go on rotation. And when you're job is like that - how the hell can you cope with the emotional/psychological stress of knowing that, however great and "all american" you're typical family life is, - tomorrow you're going back to it. 365 days till the next rotation. What sort of person would you have to be to take THAT in your stride? And you'd have to be like him. You can't get attached to your life.

Ahh, the beauty of watching movies then gathering on the interwebz to discuss them ... all of us offering our 2 cents about how good or bad something was. BoneCrusher, you thought the character study was great; I thought it was regurgitated and generic. However, I see that we both agree about the weak plot.
- ??> what would be a "strong" plot to you??Khurram
- that's a great question Khurram. I'm like a shitty client I guess: "I'll know it when I see it" :PPoint5
- maybe heavy fiction that keeps me guessing ... I'm not sure. Hurt Locker just seemed so predictable at times.Point5
- I think for you it would involve one man’s quest for justiceKhurram
- with a twist at the end. (PS, it was the government all along, they had a secret agreement with the cartels)Khurram

Exactly Khurram.
If I was defusing a bomb, I'd be like, "woah".
