Krugman:
It goes like this: Person A says “Black is white” — perhaps out of ignorance, although more often out of a deliberate effort to obfuscate. Person B says, “No, black isn’t white — here are the facts.”
And Person B is considered to have lost the exchange — you see, he came across as arrogant and condescending.

Here's the thing though, I bet those people with high IQs are not just Democrats/ liberals but urban dwellers who get exposed to a whole different world than someone living in a little town somewhere.
If you look at the IQ chart the states at the top tend to be more densely populated with big cities, while the states near the bottom like Idaho, South Dakota, and Montana are more or less vast expanses of countryland. Not a surprise that if you grow up in a farming town with 500 people your IQ might be slightly lower than someone who grows up in the middle of New York City. Of course small towns are also more religious and tend to vote Republican. Ironically if you go back 100 years the political affiliations were almost completely reversed and the small-town religious people voted almost completely for the Democrats while the city dwellers voted more for Republicans.

Organized religion has always been about keeping the people in order. Telling people how to live their lives through fear and scary fairy tale bed time stories written by a group of people with their own agendas in mind. When this fuses with politics, you have a state of zombie like sheeple. This can be exemplified in what you call "Middle America / the South".

I think the baiting of intellectualism from the right is very strongly related to the religious mistrust of science, something that has been in tension since the reformation, the enlightenment, luther, galileo, right through to today's attempts to force Intelligent Design into schools, and the rallying around against the new atheist movement.

you know, i hate it when a liberal says something intelligent, or tries to explain a concept to a conservative, and then the conservative always accuses the liberal of being an elitist or arrogant. they're so insecure. like if we aren't as dumb as a rock (like them), then we're "elitists" or something (implying that it's a bad thing).
i WANT these "elitists" running the world. they have much higher standards and expectations.

Religion, the current theory goes, did not help people survive or reproduce necessarily, but goes along the lines of helping people to be paranoid, Kanazawa said. Assuming that, for example, a noise in the distance is a signal of a threat helped early humans to prepare in case of danger.
"It helps life to be paranoid, and because humans are paranoid, they become more religious, and they see the hands of God everywhere," Kanazawa said.
- It's conclusions like that that make intellectuals sound like a-holes.luckyorphan
