South Island is the go if you have 3 weeks. Milford Sound is beautiful. If you like extreme activities Queenstown is the place. Lots of amazing wineries too around Otago.
If you like hiking book yourself on one of the great walks - the Milford Track is the poster boy but be ready for wading waist deep if it's wet. The Routeburn is also very good but the best of these 3 is the Holyford Track IMHO. There's only one company does this and they fly you out over Milford Sound at the end - everyone's a winner.
And if you get to Te Anau (if you go to Milford you will be nearby) head to the cinema, it was built specifically to show 'Shadowland' and it's awesome. http://www.fiordlandcinema.co.nz…

So how mobbed do campsites get in January?
- Very. I'd avoid if you can, unless you're somewhere remote.TheyLookLikeUs

was in the south island for three months in 07.
Christchurch is ok for a start, but drive down to Queenstown and stay there, visit MiIlford Sound etc. it's beautiful. Lots of cool stuff to do from Queenstown. A must see.

nah it's cool, you'll enjoy the drive from Christchurch, the roads are fine, and empty most of the time. It is a longish drive but totally worth it if you're going to spend a few days down there, which you should do. I hope the weather is good mate you will love it.

I LOVED New Zealand and am very happy for you. It is a beautiful and amazing place and that's the best way to travel there. Definitely go see Milford Sound.

ok so you have three weeks to explore nz starting in Auckland.

my god i hate you lucky bastards with your hot weather.
better save some pennies and stop being jealous.

I remember it being a pretty misty day when we visited Milford Sound, still stunning though, and the captain of the boat was from Grimsby.

There's too much to say here really, I'm from Auckland, but in three weeks you can pretty much drive the whole length of the country and see just about everything.
North Island:
- Auckland
- Taupo
- Rotorua
- Gisborne
- WellingtonSouth Island:
- Marlborough Sounds
- Abel Tasman National Park
- Kaikoura
- Queenstown
- Te Anau + Milford Sound
- Fox + Franz Josef Glacier
- West CoastAvoid Christchurch as there's nothing there you won't have already seen in Auckland, just keep driving through to Queenstown. You MUST go to Milford Sound in Fiordland, one of the Natural wonders of the world.

Why go to new zealand when you can just go to sydney and hang out at bondi beach.
that way you get the beach plus be surrounded by unemployed kiwi's
much more authentic
- nah im just kidding, i love new zealand when i went.. just a little friendly cross tasman rivalryautoflavour
