Measure out different holders for graphics on pop stands, that require hours of work?
Before I started working here, I told him I specialize in interactive design but I can do a bit of print. Now I'm sitting here measuring all this complicated shit out.
Am I being a lazy ass? or should I accept all this as normal work being a graphic designer in 2010?
I'm also answering phones, talking to clients. I do the web development as well and design everything. Pretty much everything.

don't do it and see what happens. It's your choice.
I personally like doing things that aren't on the computer every once in a while. It's like a mini vacation.

Well, sounds like you're in a smaller boutique studio/agency environment where it is not uncommon for designers to where multiple hats including project, account and client manage, vendor calls, expense tracking and the list goes on...
Seems pretty on par for the course unless you have dedicated individuals to fulfill those needs.

I see. Those are my thoughts too.
I guess I shouldn't complain, I have a job.
- Meeklo0
well, were you assigned to do that? or are you doing someone else's job? larger agencies might have different people for all those tasks but if you are in a small shop, who's going to do that job?

Just look at it as good experience. While you may not exactly be the most qualified individual to handle a printed piece for a POP display you can still learn from the experience of doing so. It will give you a chance to work more closely with your vendors to produce your intended outcome.
It also sounds like you've been given access to clients, which is pretty rare once you start getting into the agency world.
Worst case scenario you become a more well-rounded designer. I don't think that can hurt much, can it?

It's just me here and one other guy.
Its my responsibility to do everything. I just didnt think I would be getting into this shit..

Could be worse. You could be the jizz mopper.
*closes closet door to hide mop
- eww, i bet those mops work about as well as an old paint brush that hasn't been cleaned.bulletfactory
- You gotta spray it with that pet stain removal stuff.harlequino
- Not that I know this from experience. My um...my friend told me.harlequino

In these tough economic times, you gotta take what you can get.
Look at it as you're getting paid to learn new, complicated shit.

Smaller firm = less meetings, less bureaucrazy
BUT smaller firm = do whatever is needed .... many hats worn
I'd really not worry unless you want another job.... but grass is greener elsewhere... big agency work can be lots of toilet paper ads and credit card junk mail work....

I think it boils down to how you want to work personally.
Some people are OK wearing multiple hats. Like capnron said it gives them a chance to get away from the computer. The only pitfall is that you spend less time designing.
Others, such as an unmentionable coworker of mine, is perfectly content being jacked into their machine day in and day out.
- d_rek0
er, The unmentionable would rather be left alone day in and out. They don't want to talk to clients, they don't want to present their work, they don't want to deal with vendors and filling out forms or reports of any sort. Personally, this person is probably the most useless in the office. They are an OK designer... but I think being a little more open-minded might broaden their perspectives. Jus' sayin'.

Yea I don't mind wearing lots of hats - but I just feel its a bit beyond what I should be doing.
He basically told me to measure this shit and its not panning out in illustrator even those all the measures seem to be correct.
Its just frustrating.

I kinda used to do this, often had to talk to clients, contractors & suppliers as well as somehow being tech support. Was kinda fun sometimes since I was a junior, but got boring after a while.
If you're a two man show unfortunately it's kinda tough shit - small business are crazy hard work, my parents ran one for 10 years, you always end up doing about 6 jobs.

i am yelled at by under educated computer users who buy their machines from a supermarket and then are surprised when their budget machines fail on a regular basis.
i hate it.
its a transitory period, saving.. but still, its hard. very hard.

Hands on work, broadening experience = good.

Well, count yourself lucky – at least you got a job! But hey, do you smell of hamburgers/coffee/fried chicken/bleach? Do you pump gas? Do you need to do more web development and smile at your clients to get an extra 12% on each job you deliver – on time?
quit being lazy or just quit!
