Any takers on sharing thoughts regarding Muji in Canada?

I'm thinking of thesis topics (advertising) that may be a good fit for the next fall semester.

I for one would love to see a Muji shop/stall in Toronto.

Queen West Muji outlet would be interesting.

    • It'd be a lot more interesting than anything that's there now.Andrew_D1/2

why would you want to popularize another commercial entity? i think that's a bad topic for a thesis?

like some people love bananna republic or potterbarn... why would i care to see a thesis on this topic?

    • because muji is specifically "non brand"ismith1/8
      maybe?ismith2/8
it's an interesting idea for an advertising thesisismith3/8
Oh Muji has achieved themselves a brand name.whatsup4/8
that's what makes it interesting. muji comes from a phrase that literally means no brand goodsismith5/8
      *approximate translationismith6/8
really? i thought muji either made their own stuff and/or sell other designer's stuff there.whatsup7/8
But Muji brands itself as its own lifestyle brand.whatsup8/8

I think it's an interesting idea, but I'd want to know what the significance is with having one in Toronto. I mean obviously you're there which is why you picked it, but what would make MUJI Canada better than the-next-big-thing-homegrown-in...

I don't mean to discourage and I think muji has kick ass products. Some would say Ikea is awesome too and would love to glorify themselves by turning their home into an Ikea catalog display. Right now, i just see a materialistic direction or lifestyle. Once Muji moves to Toronto, what is your thesis worth at that point. There needs to be a much bigger idea i think.

    • that's why I think MUJI is great for this. IKEA is all about giving designer things cheap and ready to assembleismith1/4
      MUJI is much more reserved.ismith2/4
I agree though that it needs an answer to WHY MUJI and not ____ismith3/4
I think there's not enough about Muji to make me care enough to consider a Muji campaign. It's just not enoughwhatsup4/4

Ok fair enough, I guess I was just looking for a challenge to create a compelling ad series for them... A bad choice for a thesis right?

So as part of my brainstorming I guess I'll cross it off, time to look at creating something of value to the public, not the masses, maybe the individual.

    • Dude; redesign the TTC and then approach them with it as their image is slightly tarnished now...ideaist

I have about 4 minutes to finish scanning/printing stuff and get to class but if I remember I want to go over why I think this is actually a good idea (though in more detail than my notes). Still if you wouldn't mind, do you know what your friends' perceptions are of MUJI (currently)? Your instructors? Other random Toronto-ans?

I thought it was weird Toronto didn't have a Muji.

Also Muji's design is so formulated now it doesn't really allow for a lot of creativity. All the big decisions like typeface, colour etc have already been made. Like ideaist said do something like the TTC and it's a completely new concept or rebrand a neighbourhood (whats the shitty one?).

    • I'd be interested in what Ross here has to say about the TTC and his struggles in improving it's designpolyestercorp

The TTC would be an interesting subject, rebranding a neighbourhood? Could Mimico have a chance? Welcome to Crackhead City! SEXY!

    • Mimico rebranding? Awesome! I'd do something more in that direction.Andrew_D
