Considering a move to LA from overseas just wondering what the job market is like over there for Sr AD/CD digital/film/traditional background ??

well...there is 12.2% official unemployment rate, (19% unofficial) in LA, which is one of the highest of all American cities...and the highest in a very long time...
so let that be your judge.

might be easier to get AD gig then a CD gig. if your into interactive, it's a bit easier also. still pretty dry.

do you have a work permit?
- Devonger0
Doesn't sound to rosy but are there any figures relating to the creative industry? and no I dont have a work permit unfortunately... sure wish I did trying to avoid my next move being London... The permit is probably my biggest hurdle I guess, hopefully 10yrs exp would help with that...

The trouble with LA is that it is a city of freelancers. (That is what actors are basically.) So when the "unemployment rate" goes up, people who freelance, or consider them selves self-employed, get left out because they are not counted in the numbers. Plus most economic growth here over the past 5 years was centered around the real estate bubble...when that collapsed, the city's economy was hit very hard.
I know many people who have left for greener pastures.

i think sydney or melbourne is a better bet. but, if you really want to go, then why not. people have done that before.

london has work, but it's hell of expensive there.

LA is very saturated with designers who are decent enough to be an AD, and ADs who are decent enough to be a CD. Add to that the fact that ad budgets for FY '10 are down significantly still, and you're looking at a competitive market in which firms and companies are hiring people at lower rates.
That being said, if you have a solid folio, can make the right connections and get in at the right shop, then you may be lucky.
- I think the skillset for CD is alot different than AD.... CD has to motivate people, sell ideas to clients without watering it down....vaxorcist
- True, but I've worked for very talented ADs who could easily step into that role.luckyorphan
- Already had their fellow designers and mad chops...all that was needed was the keys to the car.luckyorphan

have you searched the job board on krop or anywhere else? Yeah unemployment is up, but if you have talent you may get lucky and find something... but yeah work visa is #1 thing if you are serious.

If you have a film background, with actual key art in your book, you'll have an easier time finding work. Entertainment is still going strong in this town.

A friend of mine told me that signing up for art directors guilt was a good way to start in LA.

You do not want to move to California.
The state is dying, residents are fleeing and taxes are rising. They have not taken responsibility for the financial mess so they just keep making it deeper causing more harm to the residents.
Whatever you do - Do not move to a liberal state. Every single one of them is going under because of the welfare and other govt programs that have make the people lazy.
Don't believe me? Try doing some research instead of attacking what you don't understand. I lived in California for 20 years and I have seen the harm the politicians and illegals have done.
If you want to move to the states i would research Texas, Tenn, Minnesota and maybe some other midwest states.
Honestly - What I am getting from this question is you want to move to Los Angeles to become more of a hipster? Am i right or am I right?
- That's a good question at the very end.hektor911
- you're not left thats for sureeieio
- high gas and oil prices make Texas richeieio
- California's problems are that there taxes are too low to do everything they want done.boobs
- Wow... racist. Like you want a job picking fruit, sure, go for it. Ignorant fool, gtf outta herefresnobob
- This belongs in the politics thread, methinks. LA is not California.luckyorphan
- and our governor is a rep. that explains allot. lol.akrokdesign

Texas is great... graphic design is OK but the states is great.. lot to see. However we are not as hipster as LA!
Maybe Austin is a little on the hipster side.

FredMcWoozy,
you are way off base.
of the top 10 states with the highest unemployment right now, it is totally a mixed bag, but a big percentage of the job losses did occur in the conservative bible belt.
For example, the second highest unemployment rate is in Nevada (conservative state), followed by road island and then South Carolina (now when I think liberal, oh yeah, I think South Carolina).Right now is in "liberal" states like Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, all have an unemployment rate above 10 percent.
But "liberal" states like Vermont, New Hampshire, Colorado, Hawaii, and Minnesota, all have an unemployment rate below 8%.
- god i need to proof read.xcarlx
- I believe mr. xcarlx has done some fact-checkin' here. Good work.luckyorphan

"If you want to move to the states i would research Texas, Tenn, Minnesota and maybe some other midwest states."
Good God man... What great suggestions for an alternative to California. Why don't you just send the man to Boise, Idaho. Maybe he wants to live in a progressive state.

If you are interested in San Diego I know of a place hiring for Design Director.
