do any of you guys do newspaper ads. I need to do one and really never dealt with news print before.
Is there anything special I should know?

I believe it prints at 125 dpi?

Beware of light blacks. They don't reproduce well.
- true, but you can get predictable results if you set up the screens correctlymonospaced

Registration and ink levels are always really unreliable. Depending on the printer, the size of the print run, ( and for some printers, like some oldschool non digitally automated setups, it can even depend on *where* in the run) you're going to get different results..
So — if you can keep your color combinations as simple as possible,it'll yield alot more consistency. In other words, the more color plates are involved, the less control you have, and the more likely you're not going to be pleased with mud soup colors...

Learn about the line screen settings and separations (InDesign PDF export / Output / Ink Settings [etc]) when setting up a file for newsprint. Each paper has its own preferred file preparation guidelines and they are usually MORE than happy to provide them to you. And yes, identity is right, the screen is close to 125. Good luck.

Keep flat colours clean (ie. green C&Y not made up of CMY&K, just C&Y. (This will keep the colours bright and prevent muddiness). Avoid CMYK type below 12 point. Process colour pics with GCR separation (230% for newsprint or 260% for glossy news) and add a little more contrast. Process grayscale pics for 20% dot gain.
Minimum image res 180 dpi but I always use at 300dpi
Logos min 300 dpi. Lineart or similar at 600 dpi.For rich black C30 K100. Do not use 4Col K.
Minimum type: 7 point
Reverse type on single colour: 8 point
Reverse type on full colour: 10 point- These are a general guide but as krisscott21 said you should ask the publication for their specific specs to follow as they all differ.ali

what everyone else said. registration can be sloppy. for small text on a color BG, 100K + overprint fill is your best and safest option.
