The dev team are fucking incompetent and I highly doubt they even use the Flash environment anymore because most of the new changes barely fucking work. They managed to try and copy the after effects timeline but its barely useable for actual work.
I'm guessing they all just use FlashDevelop (nothing wrong with using that of course, but the team should eat their own dogfood) there and spend all day wanking off thinking about RIAs when 90% of flash is video players and banners.

The only advice I can give is DO NOT work in Adobe off networks. I remember this problem started with CS3 and has not been fixed in CS4. Adobe has weird habits of shutting down and deleting files off networks. Just work locally for the most part. Oh and it's not bad all the time but when the problem happens you gets a big bad "FECK".

Never heard of that before. Of all of the problems I've run into with Flash, it always had to do with the fonts I have installed. Even if the problem had nothing to do with text inside of Flash, if I just used the minimum amount of fonts that I needed on the system, Flash would behave. I don't think it has anything to do with Ram either, I've always had a ton of Ram. The last problem I can remember was Flash not saving or taking too long to save or just suddenly crashing on me. I know it sounds stupid but may be worth a try.

I have had a recurring problem in Dreamweaver when editing a CSS file in the code window - it says I do not have user rights to overwrite the file, so I close it down and then the friggin' file has disappeared! Always save as with a different name now to stop it disappearing but WTF!? A right ball-ache the first couple of times it happened. Late night lonely crying moments - staring at a screen with noone to help me... Most disappointing.

I feel your pain, but I've never heard of this kind of error. You can try recovery software?
In the future I can't emphasize enough how worth it a backup drive with Time Machine(or PC equivalent) is.
And since we agree that Flash can be a rotting hole, version control is also a lifesaver. When you get to a milestone in development, save that version of everything into an archive.
Good luck, man.

something similar happened to me when i was working off the server in work. flash crashed and the fla disappeared. anytime i do flash stuff now i work off my desktop, which seems to work better. i dunno if thats of any help.
maybe you could also try a flash decompiler on the swf (if you still have it) to recover your work

ok this is just a rant.. but FFS! Flash doesn't like to save a file if I've put my machine on standby without closing the file. If I have done work without saving, I have to copy all the frames and paste into a new document. OK, I can deal with that. Harmless little bug. Like a ladybug. But today, I made a small change and tried to save so it gave the error, so I said fuckit I'll just close and open the file properly.
it's gone!! the feckin file has feckin disappeared, and I spent 2 FECKING DAYS making that!!! that's 2 days of work, my time, down the drain! deadline looming!! what the fuck kind of bug does this?!!!!! it's never done it before, when i've had multiple versions saved, nooooo!!! the swf's still there, whoop dee fecking doo... but it's all timeline animation and decompilers mess that up completely!
AAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
