I know they got a bad rep because of IE6's inability to handle alpha transparancy, but with IE6 kinda dead and burried, do you now use PNG for your websites or do you stick to GIF and JPEG?

png and the ie6 png hack.
- unfortunately 90~% of my clients still have ie6 as their browser (and they can't change it). Sucks :o(seeessess

PNG doesn't need to be transparent.. and IE6 is only a problem if you use 24bit transparency.
JPEGs are still needed for photos.
I use all three.

ie6 png hacks work very good, there are several out there 2 of them pretty good. Anyways if javascript is disabled you are screwed.
I am working on a project now, that we totally ignore IE6 !
and everyone should just put a warning sign IE6 must die and if we don't kill it who will?
- not supporting IE6 is not an option for most corporate clientsacescence
- i'm with hilchev here, also working on a project that will be used by international embassy's - client is fine with no IE6 supportSamush
- If JS is disabled you're screwed with or without a png-hack nowadays.pylon
- don't use javascript but add a seperate stylesheet for ie6 with alternate imagesTimson

I use PNGs most of the time. And as lukus mentioned, PNGs don't have to be transparent.

Post up your preferred ie6 png fixes.
I've only just started using this: http://24ways.org/2007/superslei…
I encountered some problems with links becoming inactive; had to include extra mark-up to make it work. I'm looking for better alternatives (if they exist).

I no longer supporting IE. I inform my clients of this before engaging on anything Web-related. If that's a problem for them they can call up any of the myriad of designers who do support IE. (I'll still be able to make rent and yet never have to deal with such a beastie browser.) So PNG hacks are not a problem for me.
What is a problem is that PNG color profile support seems to be inconsistent between various browsers / platforms. If the image needs to be lush and vibrant JPEG is still more reliable for me.

- hahahaha. fucking genius. why would you support 70-80% of the market. hahaha.airey
- You must serve a very niche market. The reality is that most sites still have considerable numbers coming from IE6.bort

Just do it in Flash, and use whatever format you want!

This is handy for encouraging all IE6 holdouts to upgrade: http://shapeshed.github.com/ie6-…

htc

yeah, what many people fail to realize is that the majority of those using IE6 have no option to upgrade, no matter how many clever little reminders you create to try to shame them into it. they are generally large businesses that have money invested in intranets and many many pcs that would cost them lots of money to upgrade.

- I'm in one of those. Everyone is jealous that I also have a Mac.monospaced
- One of our clients is a leading bank and another a leading dept store and both use IE6 in their corp offices....pylon
- Exactly.juhls
- ....so when we dev for the we actually dev a second site that's served to IE6.pylon

But, umm, those aren't the people, generally speaking, who are surfing the internet. Let's say you're designing a site for a consumer product, or a luxury product: why consider them? A lot of these people are probably sitting at machines that are blocked from viewing the internet, per se.

I use the htc fix for PNGs or will use trans. GIFs if the design doesn't need PNGs.

I use pngs by default.

i'm still laughing over stewdio not building sites for IE. awesome. the comment he made is beautiful. truly golden arrogant ignorance. stellar really.
- stewdio0
@airey. You're really speaking out of turn here. My IE comment comes from experience and careful planning, not ignorance. I've structured my practice and client base such that I do not have to build for IE. And I can still pay the bills. To me that's a pretty special feat. Why not just be happy for me? It's not my fault you've still got the IE brick hanging round your neck.

I don't design for IE6 and haven't done so for about 3 months.
PNG's are my preferred save for web file type.
