F*CK the 40-50" TV's.
Get yourself a Projector.
I've got 90" on my living room wall for watching DVDs/BlueRays/PS3And get yourself a decent wee-ish tv for watching the usual crap on tv while you are eating your breakfast or dinner and keep dvds and gaming more of a special experience by turnign the lights off and getting the projector on the go.
seriously!
you could get a decent projector and a wee(ish) lcd for the same cost as getting a big 52"- i hate Projectors!!!! They will never look as good as an LCD or LEDrusty_ace

love my samsung LCD, very nice blacks...but the LEDs do look even better.

depends where you put it and what you watch on it mostly.
LCD is good for bright rooms
Plasma is good for dark roomsPlasma is better to watch sports with and probably V-games.
LCd is good for images with bright whites. but it doens't produce blacks as well.Plasma use more energy and generates more heat.
Prices are comparable.
Better Plasmas have ways of minimizing/eliminating the risk of burn.
I think plasmas weigh more because they use glass instead of some shitty plastic screen (at least that's true for panasonic).
- My LCD produces blacks as well as any Plasma, and that feature is directly related to the price.monospaced

LED is the way to go if you can afford it. The picture is a lot brighter than the standard LCD screens that use tubes for lighting. The LED LCD uses, you guessed it, LED's for lighting which are brighter and more define.

All the naysayers and plasma haters... ever actually owned one or just giving your opinion by repeating others? I bought my first plasma in 2004, a 42" Panasonic Viera and it still looks better than some current models. I've gamed (PS2 then Xbox 360), watched letter-boxed movies etc, no burn in. And back then there weren't as many built-in protections. I've since bought a 50" Viera and the quality for watching BluRay movies is fantastic and gaming is still better, not having to worry about compensating for lag (though I think many LCDs have gotten past this). The new LCDs are very close, but there is no better black level and flesh tones than on plasma to date IMO.
I've got 2 higher end 32" LCDs in bedrooms, a Sony and a Samsung and they are great, but the image just doesn't seem quite as natural as plasma can create.
And whoever said "the cheaper technologies have won out" maybe you should compare a good 42" plasma to a comparable LCD. The plasmas are typically cheaper now.
My two cents. I didn't want to sound like a fan boy, but I always hear plasma take shit from people, then 99% of the time when I ask if they ever owned one, they say no.
- Yeah, I am not sure why people hate either. The reviews I've read put Plasma on top, image quality wiseformed
- I've got a Sony LCD and it sucks, ghosting/motion is bad. It is a few years old, thoughformed
- But you didnt go the cheap route. that is why plasmas are cheaper is because problems and life expectancy.FredMcWoozy

I have a 50" Panasonic Plasma, beautiful, good contrast and great color. I have a few friends who have LCD's and their TV's look crappier than mine. I have never owned a LCD so I am just going by experience from a plasma owner and looking at friends, but i would only buy plasma, and I would consider a LED tv too.

picked up a 42" philips lcd over the holidays. I really dig it, an all around great tv. the new 240hz ones seem great tho I've heard a lot of people say they can't really tell the difference.
if you're not a videophile, the standard 60hz will not only save you a buck but will also look incredible at the same time.

I've been strictly plasma... Panasonic. I've owned a 42" and now a 50". Burn-in happens to both and plasma's have fixed the major issue they had when they first came out. Now... pause your movie or game and walk away for 20-30 minutes and you'll get some burn-in... but that goes for both technologies.
Not sure why everyone is upselling LCDs... both work great. IMO, when I compare at stores, plasmas always seem a bit warmer and, on Panasonics, the blacks are near perfect.
It's all about what you want to use it for. I lvoe my tv... especially while viewing HD movies. ;)
- Plasmas have worse burn-inmonospaced
- Like I said... I've owned two... never an issue with burn-in. I think using it as an excuse is a bit lame.rainman
- Worse burn-in... if you pause something for a day or 2 straight. If you do that, you're retarded.ETM
- Also, an image after 20-30 minutes is called retention, not burn-in. It goes away.ETM
- And even so, 20-30 mins seems low. You watch a letter box movie for 2 hrs and I see no retention.ETM
- I stand corrected and agree with everything ETM wrote.rainman

Low Refresh Rate (60Hz), but also a low price. I hear low refresh rates are bad news for sports n such.

Do you all have HD with your LCDs? I've found regular digital cable doesn't look that great. I think I have RCA jacks though.
- Kind of looks like a medium quality jpgseed
- seed, get an HDMI cable. Friend has a samsung and HD is amazing.FredMcWoozy

plasma tv's consume too much energy
- ETM0
Oddly enough, I found the same as seed did, SD signals look a little smoother on Plasmas. Not sure if that is just a software thing or some sort of pixel difference. Maybe because plasma cells act like old tube pixels with a tiny amount of space between them, it creates an artificial softening effect.

So... reading all the "opinions" the best solution is to go out and compare for yourself.
- Well, it is your eyeballs, your wallet. Bring some of your typical viewable product...DoktorDavid
- ...and compare. That used to be a tried and true method for buying stereo equipment...DoktorDavid
- ...but does anyone actually buy stereo equipment anymore?DoktorDavid

Plasmas normally die after about 2 years. that is why prices are dropping and have been dropping. If you play video games or watch stock market channels do not get a plasma. They burn images to your screen. I am sure someone already said this but...If it is going to be an office TV or spare TV then I would say do it. But do not buy a plasma for your main television.
- Yes plasma hater but look at the market.FredMcWoozy
- Die after 2 years? I still have my 2004 model. As I asked previously to people, you ever actually owned one?ETM

Just bought a 55" LG LCD for 1999.99 plus a 4 year warranty. It's 240hz full HD (1080p) and beautiful. Has everything I want.
I would have got an LED TV if I could have afforded it. The LG or a Samsung. I personally would not buy any other brand.
If my TV dies in four years then I'll get a new one. If not, by the time I need a new one, LED will be at the top of it's game and (though how much better can they really get?) cheaper.
Hz refers to frequency which with TV's refers to refresh rate. For sports and quick action you want the TV to refresh real quick. I asked about plasma too, but the guy showed me the difference though I don't watch much sports nor do much gaming. He did mention that the older plasma could burn but that the newer ones were much less likely to do it. As for the TV you need for the brightness of your room, it's hogwash! The TV I bought can be set up to adjust for ambient light. I wanted the best picture and the best price. Too bad the LED in the size I wanted was so expensive. If you do get an LED you want to get the full array LED not the diffusion, so I'm told.
Once you get the TV home you won't be able to actively compare it side-by-side so you'll be happy with what you bought.
One question I did have though was regarding having your TV professionally calibrated? I opted to wait on that since they wanted another 300 dollars for it. They said a guy comes by your place with a $7000 dollar piece of equipment and does it in about 20 minutes. Has anyone had this done? Was there a big difference? Who did it for you?

plasma uses about 3 times the amount of energy that an LCD uses, so go LCD if your thinking about energy costs
