Boarding passes

this guy's a douche. check his redesigns.
although i entirely agree with the guy's point, the issue is standardising a machine / system to cope with a multitude of variables that will possible expand during the life of the piece of shit budget driven machine / system. obviously i could be a shitload better but would you want to pay more in either flight costs or airport taxes so the systems were updated enough to cope with a nicer designed boarding pass? without much thought:
• how long are the queues going to get while the fucking printer hammers through the giants reverse blocks. "hang on sir, i gotta change this fucking cartridge again...".
• last design, what is the gate number is more than 2 digits?
• the small map is a nice idea but what if you're flying from alaska to hawaii?
• most importantly - get a mortgage or vd so you have some real issues to deal with, you obviously have too much free time and no current life partner.just my 2 cents, i'm no doubt clueless.

nice designs, but what airey said....

I dig what the guy is putting fourth... as airey mentions there are flaws, but still, it'd be nice to do this exercise. How many times are you looking for boarding time versus gate versus terminal.
Don't jump on the guy for doing it, but give feedback that will help (as the lower portion of the post).

while were at it, lets redesign 7-11 receipts, they look like shit as well.
- I look at my receipts don't you?kgvs72
- yeah, and they look like shit, so I think someone should take the initiative to make them look "designy"ThePublics

^ hmm, that's a bit harsh. while i'm not completely 'on board' with his take, i do appreciate hiim taking the initiative.
I've always flown American almost exclusively and get my boarding pass at the kiosk when I arraive at the airport. Those flimsy paper passes aren't layed out in the most intuitive way and could certainly benefit from this type of thinking.

addendum: i must actually state that i dig the redesigns i just feel the reality of necessity hasn't been taken into account. design is nice but not probable. not the anyone would give a shit, just thought i'd say.

makes a good point. but I think the redesign type, is more illegible than the original. I understand that it gives a good look, and speaks to the airline industry but as function, I believe it fails.

What confuses me is the receipt versus boarding pass. They look 90% the same. That would also be a nice exercise.
btw - Virgin has nice boarding cards since they're half the size. Less paper. Although a thinner stock and less ink on the back would help [the green effort] too.

So I guess we all learned a lesson today about design, heads, asses, functionality, reality and so forth. Kudos.

His first attempt whilst ink heavy is much better than what he ended up with imo. It might be lacking room/details however, I'm sure there is much more to the design and production of these things than we are aware of from the end product.
- I'll also add that whilst we all love super condensed univers, it ain't entirely easy to read.tOki

Fail.
Why?
It fails to approach the issue of using boarding pass in paper form. I find simple graphical change is nothing more then a bandaid and not the solution.

One day we'll just get it flashed to our retinas via a chip in our brain and check in with another chip in our wrist.

Understand: the passes aren't just for the passenger to look at as well. It's a contract between the customer and every airline employee he comes across, denoting just what his limitations are. This information must be accessible to the customer, and also coded for employees to make snap decisions on what should be done with said customer.
It should be single sided, one color, and printed on the same untearable stock they make parking tickets with.

| info for customer side | serial/bar code for attendant |
|___________________|___________...Maybe stop calling it "ticket" and more like "reciept"

leave the guy alone. It's a great observation that they are missed opportunities fro branding and advertising. Badly designed in general, and getting worse. I fly once a week at least so I definately think he has a point.
Remember the guys who thought wouldnt be interesting to fuck about with bar codes

retina scans all the way. anyone else sign up for IRIS?
i was shocked that my friend used her iphone for a boarding pass the other day. no paper at all.
and this guys redesigns miss his very good point.
+ what airey said.
