Our lovely client is asking the usual question - "can we add some animation to our email?".
I've always been of the impression that animation in emails (GIF) is a bad bad idea. Does anyone have any links to articles or 'best practices' that explain why this is not a good idea?

bad idea as 95% of email clients block images anyway

i've done it before... depends on the people you are sending the email to.

actually had this problem this week, here's a solution that worked for me
-
make the gif,
load it into a html file with the image url (use tables, no css or java)
put it on a server
open safari, press ctrl + i or file/send this page in mail,
test it,
it worked in mail / outlook/ hotmail /gmail and my webmail client so far
do not forget to make the gif light, I try keeping mine under 250k

only do it if you want your email to be sent directly to the junk folder

^^^ Learned this the hard way. Make sure that the first frame of the animation encompasses the entire message. Browser based clients will animate the message (gmail, yahoo, etc)
