Hi guys,
Just wondering if someone might be able to give me a couple of really simple pointers.I am trying to put together a small website in dreamweaver. However, whenever, I try to give text an 'h' format to some text, the text seems to jump down the div its in, leaving a gap at the top of the div.
I've tried adding a style to the h tag in the css area, but I still cant get the text to stay in the right position...I really hope this makes sense.
Thanks in advance for any help.
x

really sorry. I just re read this post and it doesnt make much sense at all.
I mean that whenever I highlight the text and add the 'h1' format, the text moves down the div. Hence, I end up with a gap at the top of the div.
When I highlight the text and give it a 'p' format this doesnt happen. eeekhelp.

hi polly,
what you should start off with is a reset stylesheet, and make sure its the first stylesheet you reference in the code.
if you google that you should be able to pick up one pretty quickly...
(i recommend eric meyers)
this will reset all your margins and paddings and borders to zero.
you can then probably get a template layout for a 2-3 coloumn layout somewhere as a starting point...i would recommend reading about the CSS box model on w3schools
i prepared this wee demo for such an occasion :http://stugoo.co.uk/testbed/boxm…
hope this helps

yeah you need a reset stylesheet, there are a few out there

this happens because each item has a default value in the browser. if you use the reset css mentioned above it should help.
also you should _never_ test using preview in dreamweaver and always test your site in a browser.
in DW it is file > preview in browser

Thanks. great help.
can i reset the css when I've already built the layout or do I need to start again. sorry to sound a bit of a doofus but I'm new to this.

the reset stylesheet is independent of your site, it is just linked on the <head>. you can put it now, or later. but the sooner you link it, the better, because it will change how things look.

ok. nice one. thank you.x

If you dont want to use a reset, trying setting the margins and padding to zero on the H tag in question.
margin:0;
padding:0;

ah - everyone is so nice to girls, why can't this help (with no sarcasm) prevail on this site... :o)
and for the record - don't mess about with the reset sheet for a simple site - just do the above.
