We have a small design studio, most of our colour prints are for our own use or for meetings. We currently use an aging inkjet but i'm getting fucked off with it's inconsistency, dirty heads etc.
For presentations we send stuff to a print shop around the corner.
So my QBN question(s) de jour is...
i've got a $600 ish budget - should i get a colour laser or another inkjet?
If laser, is $600 enough?
what's the quality like?
will it be ok for us?
are they as inconsistent as inkjet?

Colours are never as deep with lazer, and 600$ won't get you a great printer.. i would go for the ink jet, even if printing takes for ever.

maybe a xerox phaser, uses solid ink. you can get one for under 600. inkjets are disposable crap designed to sell you ink.

You mentioned dirty heads... let me guess Epson?
if you are just using it internally, get an HP, they usually have heads the on cartridges so you get new ones each change.

The Dell 3130CN seems to be well liked.

it's important to not just look at printer price, but also ink costs and whether you can get generic replacements.
that Dell 3130 above for instance, while it's 500 bucks with some started cartridges, to get full size cartridge replacements from Dell will set you back over $800.

Interesting.
I had no idea each cartridge was the price of an inkjet printer.
anyone know how the running costs match up?
how long will they last?I really like the glossy blacks you get from a laser printer though.
- You typically get thousands of impressions with laser vs a few hundred with inkjet.ETM

I'd lease a laser if you are doing enough prints. It's annoying to pay so much more, but if you have the right work/clients you can make more money out of it.

I'm trying to decide between purchasing an A3 grayscale laser vs. an A4 color laser. This is for home / small studio use. Have any of you made the tough decision between grayscale and color? Were you happy with your choice? Model recommendations?
