I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but you really should have planned this "driving up to catch a hockey game" about a year ago. Vancouver is so over sold that cruise ships are renting rooms in port. That being said I have opening ceremonies and 4 hockey games, but I had too, I live here.

I'm sure you could find tickets to something if you're willing to pay through the nose for accommodations. Though if the event is early enough in the day you could always make the drive back to Seattle. Craigslist and Kijiji have tickets for all kinds of events.

VANOC has set-up a site for the resale/scalping of tickets, effectively eliminating/monopolizing tickets sales.

that's not actually true, there are plenty of hotel rooms and the cruise ship thing was a big fail. You can easily get a hotel room in Richmond....FOR 600 bucks.
