Looking to use an embeddable video player capable of playing as wide a variety of formats as possible. mov, flv, 3gp, wmv, avi, etc.
Any suggestions for a solution? (Thread search has not helped so far).

VLC should play just about anything.

Embedded as what?

Perian adds a bunch of codecs to Quicktime - works very well. VLC for anything else.

If you need to display the video on site, wouldn't you just convert everything to a flv (using something like ffmpeg) and play it using a standard embeddable flash video player?
Alternatively, I read that HTML5 has good support for video - and that video can be played in the browser as a standard content type.

does not exist.
html5 video is shaping up to be pretty useless, will only play ogg in firefox and mp4 in safari. no IE. there's also no way to stop a video from downloading and playing automatically when you hit a page without the use of javascript.

Crap, never read "embeddable."
Yup, what acescence said.
