"It is 4 mins 48 seconds long and was made on a budget of $300 (£186)."
Doubt that, probably stole a couple of grand of software- That's probably not including the exchange rate of the Software cost in South America.SoulFly

It's like Cloverfield meets War of the Worlds. This one looks better than both.

$300 = $5835 UYU (Uruguaya pesos).
Even at that conversion, I'd still like to see the production spreadsheet.

oh, come on. i'm surprised you guys keep on buying those rags-to-riches myths. The only actual cost obvious was the camera rental then he went and shot some of those plates himself, edited it himself then spend 5 months doing all the special effects in his garage while working at fast food restaurant. It was a hobby (meaning no real deadlines or having to deal with a money hungry post place). Only a truly madman would offer a guy like that 30m.

I watched the video, good stuff. I am fairly certain that between the camera, software and his time to animate, edit and produce the video it cost much more than $300.

maybe this dude deserves a hollywood contract as an editor, a writer or in some kind of lead cgi position, but as a producer? what this guy knows about producing a 30m movie in hollywood? what about casting, hiring staff, fund-raising, distribution? we've seen miracles before, but there's a great chance that this movie will fail miserable, and this dude will travel back to montevideo after his first movie.

the robot flick was credited under Paris Texas production house on imdb, but there's no mention of it in their site (btw they have some decent stuff there):
a little youtube search dropped out this other production house:
and a bunch of other stuff from this dude:

the reason why these kids are asked is because of cost effectiveness. if this guy feels like working his ass of 20 hours per day then the producer knows he can save on two or three (if not more) pricey specialists, which he then pockets himself. please do know those hollywood kids are all about the money anyway.

it just looks like some short he made to get work, like every employable cg artist has a short like this and they don't get movie deals they just use it to show off their skills. This new trend reminds me of the 90s when every two bit film student was getting movie deals just because they made a grainy short that screened at a film fest. I guess this happens in every industry.
