Where you will be happy in the city is definitely contingent upon:
– Your budget
– Your desired walkability
– Your safety comfortThere are no neighborhoods that combine the ideal of these three values.
Tenderloin: + budget, - safety, so-so walkability
The Haight: - budget, + safety, + walkability
Richmond: + budget, + safety, - walkabilityIf you truly are without car, I'd try the Mission or the Haight first, depending on your budget and tolerance of hipsters. Or, live in Oakland or Berkeley for a couple months to suss out the area without breaking the bank. I live in Berkeley, which is 15 - 20 minutes by car or 40 by BART to the city, and I've been happily exploring it for some time now without feeling like an outsider.
Also, hit me up when you arrive. I'll gladly beer us.
Cheers,
Evin

go to Ebisu in Inner Sunset

I'll be living with the ladyfriend. We are thinking about just settling up someplace for a three month lease in the interm before making a full commitment to a specific neighborhood. Any tips would be appreciated, and met with beer on my arrival.
- sf = yawn...robotron3k
- I know, it is no Brooklyn... it pains me too dude...Seanbot

Depends what you're looking for. Are you single, do you have a family, is the Castro more your speed, etc? Where are you working? You looking for whitebread and restaurants or more varied folks in your neighborhood? What is your budget like? Rent or buy?
SF is pricey and really varied – including all the surrounding areas. For example, I live in the east bay where we rent a house for less than we paid for a 2 bedroom apartment in the city. Kids play on the street and we've got a nice yard to boot (all which matter as we're expecting). we've got public transit, but I ride a motorcycle which is hands down the best way to commute.

Take a drive through the Marin Headlands.

What is your budget and what are you expecting to get for that budget? What you like to eat, do with your time off, and your other preferences are pretty secondary.

SOMA, Market and Tenderloin are fine and plenty of good people live there. But once again, it all depends on what you're looking for in a neighborhood. So far, all you've mentioned is that you won't have a car for 6 months.
Where are you going to work in Hayes Valley?
- i live int he tl on OFarrell. Its the last nice street before it turns to shit. Bad neighborhood for a car to. No residential parking.instrmntl

Stay away form SOMA and anywhere near Market Street. Stay away from the Tenderloin, too.
- Seanbot0
Being that I'm traveling out, I'll likely hold onto my car for the next 6 months until the dust settles.
As for work, I'll be in Hayes Valley. I enjoy going out and seeing people on the street (which is not the scene in Minneapolis) but I like to escape the rif-raf when I'm at home. A friend mentioned SOMA, but it seems really mall like...

Outer Richmond. It's my neighborhood.

What are you looking for in a neighborhood? It all depends on your likes/dislikes/needs/wants...

move to petaluma and commute
- Petaluma rocks!instrmntl
- 40 miles, one way. that's nuts.akrokdesign
- if you drive 260 days. per a year. back and forward. it's 20,800 miles. plus all other driving my might do. lets say 25k.akrokdesign
- 25.000. so, in 4 years. that car has 100.000 miles on it.akrokdesign
- Petaluma commute would kill you. Not worth it.nikdaum
- yeah, dont move there if you want to work in sf. i like it because thats where i grew up. nice to visit.instrmntl
