I have for years been working on a PC with Adobe Premiere for all my video work, now i moved over to a Mac and using Final cut Pro 7 and its a dream to work with BUT I are having problems with the Export options. What to choose? most of the time i just want to render out a quicktime, 720x576 16:9 or smaller, and not to big files but i cant get it right and there is a millions of options. I tryed using Compression but there is sooo many settings here too and i never get it right. I liked better the way Premiere was handling this.
What settings should i use for export?
And finaly, if i want to have the movie out as a flash video, whar program should i use for this? I used Sorenson Squeeze on the PC.

Final Cut is far better than Premiere when it comes to everything including exporting, it really depends what you want to do with the exported files. if you want a .mov file, you need to decide on a codec, e.g. DV-Pal or H264, just like you have to in Premiere, make this choice depending on what the file is for... then go to File>Export>Quicktime movie and choose the settings you have decided upon, or launch compressor, create a new setting with your desired parameters and apply it to the clip. As to FLV output try this: http://www.ffmpegx.com/

i've taken to using apple ProRes for everything. i get lots of mixed sources with different codecs but as long as i set my sequence to use apple ProRes, my final exported self contained movie is ProRes. for me that codec is the best quality for the smallest file size.
as for exporting out FLVs, i'm using adobe media encoder that came bundled with the CS4 package.

H.264 is a great codec for delivery / viewing (just don't try and edit with it) - I usually post for clients with the settings / quality slider set to "high". Small file size and good quality.
As for Flash - Telestream makes a WMV and FLV output plugin via Compressor, but you may have to purchase Episode to get it (never tried, sorry):

Infirm's ffmpegx.com link looks promising though...

I get a nice picture when i use the apple ProRes, so i think i will start using that.
One more thing, the Quicktime file that FC makes seems not to be an right Quicktime, when i open it, it opens in FC and not in QT, when people on a PC try and see the file they can`t. hm...
- try exporting with quicktime conversion, its just under quicktime in the export menu. then you get a file that opens in FCitstimefortea

I know this, but its still a strange format, will not play on a PC with Quick Time on it.

the ProRes codec for PC is read only.
