Saw an ad on craigslist asking for a freelancer to do a logo redesign. These days, we all need some extra cash, so I sent a link with my portfolio. This was the response I received:
Thank you for your quick response. Attach you will find the logo that I want to improve. The idea would be to make a different, new and improved logo, you can send me one or several, I had over 80 applicants, I would pick the one that I like the most. I will pay $150 for the job.
Thank You,
(name withheld)
********
At first I laughed and brushed it off, but later decided to write a response:I appreciate the offer. Unfortunately, I don't perform work prior to an agreement for payment. This policy ensures that I'm fairly
compensated for my time as a designer. In my opinion, asking 80 designers to design your logo for free is the equivalent of asking 80 carpenters to build cabinets for your home, and only paying one of them to do so.
Your charging rate and method for finding a new logo will only attract uneducated designers with poor business practices. Any decent designer
with self-respect should be offended by your proposal. If you'd like to discuss your redesign in a realistic manner, feel free to contact me.
*******The saddest part of the story is that the guy put all of the potential designers' emails in the "to" field, for all to view. Everyone's having a heyday replying all and advising the other designers not to work for him while telling this guy that he's batshit crazy.
Thanks for the entertainment, craigslist.

mah, the lynch mob thing is probably too much at this point. I'm sure he gets the point, but here's another reply from a designer with a photo they dug up (most of the emails are saying the same thing, nothing too gnarly has been replied yet). Looking at the photo gave me some real douche-chills:
...Its clear that Fabian has no idea what he is doing. And to charge $150 for a professional logo when you are seen posing here in front of 2 sports cars is pretty lame...

I like your response. If a company uses this approach just in their regular business practices they really won't be around very long; Imagine what they would do in a professional environment.

Great response to him!

If I do a logo for a friend / client and they pay very little or nothing at all I consider it more of a portfolio piece, therefore they have less of a say in how it looks.

You think that's bad, go to crowdspring. Tons of horrible horrible work, with a few gems. I feel bad for the gems that lose out to the crap too, but I guess that's the risk you take.

Here's an email that Fabian's assistant sent to everyone on the list:
I'm Itza, Fabians assistant,
I'm pretty sure that there many people who refuse to work with you.
You know what, first of all this kind of expression from your part is very unproffessional, second of all we are not going to spend probably $200 for each logo that each one of the applicants provide.
You could of just erase the e-mail that he sent, instead you have the time to write something like this, that probably means that you don't have many jobs to do.
I don't think that Fabian put a gun to your head to make a sample logo.
Hopefully we don't meet people like you in the future.
Have a nice life which I doubt it.- Instead of asking designers to make a sample logo, couldn't they just ask to see a portfolio? Nah.Brand0
