Decided to reinstall my Dell Latitude E6400 laptop but get the blue screen of death when installing an old copy of XP. Should I get (yarrr) a new XP installation or try the shiny bastard 7?
- lukus_W0
If you're paying for it - windows 7 will probably be a similar price to XP maybe?
- GeorgesII0
Let me guess you don't have the original manufacturer cds?
I'll try to find a legit (muahahah) copy of xp, 7 is awesome, but xp is better

What spec does a "Dell Latitude E6400" have?
if it's a more than a 3 year old machine, I'd just stick with XP.
You might want to note down and check the details in your BSoD - if it's doing it straigh tupon reinstall, it hints at it being a hardware problem - have you checked memory integrity, etc?
- I think the blue screen might have something to do with the DVD drive.Ruffian

Damn, same thing. Blue screen error and fuck you very much.

It's a pretty mighty little machine, here are the specs: http://www.dell.com/us/en/enterp…

How do I find out which SATA drivers I need?
- flashbender0
have you tried any of the fixes for that?
- < not sure if that will work on your systemflashbender
- also, it is definitely a hardware issueflashbender

Aye, it looks like a boot problem -
http://support.microsoft.com/?kb…
- thing is, this is happening *after* you've installed XP? That would mean your HD is mostly ok - but it's falling over something earlier in the boot select chain.
You don't have a USB option higher up the boot chain do you? I seem to recall my Dad's Dell had a problem along these lines.

FLASHBENDER I LOVE YOU!

Seems to be formatting and moving on to the actual installation. Sould I change the SATA settings back to what they were after the installation is over?
- Ruffian0
Everybody, let's all hug flashbender. (let me know when you're in Riga, the drinks are on me)
- Ruffian0
Sould I change the SATA settings back to what they now when the installation is over? Flashbender? Detritus? Anyone?
- flashbender0
My recommendation would be to keep them where they are. If it is looking for a RAID and you are not running raid, then it will most likely fail again.
If you really want to you can change them back, see if it boots, and if it doesn't just put them back to the settings that worked.
Oh, and I love you too man.

I love you too Detritus

- after reading that again, keep it where it is. it will most likely bluescreen if you set it back to /AHCIflashbender

also, just for posterity and if anyone stumbles across this in the future:
I had the same problem with a Dell Optiplex 330. I received the
STOP 0x0000007B(0xF78DA63C,0x0000034... x0000000,0x0000000 error message if I booted with Windows XP. I resolved the issue by the following actions1. On start up (Dell logo), press F2 to enter BIOS
2. Expand the "Drives" section
3. Go to "SATA Operation"
4. Change this from "RAID Auto/AHCI" to "RAID Auto/ATA"
