Is it a good idea to use the @font-face, do most browser support embedded fonts know, are there other alternatives to the @font-face.

Practical alternatives are dynamic PHP image headers, sIFR or Cufon. All fall short of the ideal in some way or another.
If you're confident your target market will all be running FireFox 3.5+ and nothing else, go right ahead and use @font-face.
I used it recently on a site that'll likely only ever be used by me and [very few] people like me, and was very impressed by it.
I just wish it was standard operating procedure.. but of course, it won't be when people like me essentially make entire fonts available for other freetards to leech, direct through browser.
