I just read this interesting article on guitar recording and not sure if anyone out there has tried this but I thought I would share.
If you are in a home studio setup and can't fire up your heads due to noise this is it. Forget about amp emulator hardware and software, they work great but my amp was crying out to be used.
You need to buy a power attenuator (THD Hot Plate Attenuator)http://www.zzounds.co...
then go from amp to the hot plate into your interface. Boom, your head is ready to go. Then take the raw guitar and patch it through your recording softwares cabinet emulator. It's very cool to mess around with. I have gotten a great tone from my Rivera, sounds like it was mic'd.

My friend built a hotplate no too long ago that he's wanting me to test on one of my amps - they are fantastic devices.

I used to use the old Tom Scholz Power Soak for the same thing back in the early 90's live, not just recording..before you had all the modern high gain stuff you'd have to dime your amp to get those sounds. Using the power soak you'd be able to redline the amp but still play at reasonable volumes..
EVH used a power attenuator for the early "brown sound" as well. Key to that early Van Halen sound..

- Yeah, I remember reading on how he used those for his sound. Pretty cool little tool.********
