We're working on a self initiated project to rebrand the Tasmanian Government (State of Australia) through an online blog. The current typography is terrible, we've created this article to raise awareness of the importance of type.

I'll give it a proper look through tonight... a couple things that immediately caught my attention though, first line, second paragraph "A brief introduction into the wonderful world of Type." No need to capitalise "Type"
Now it might just be me, but I'm not digging the full-justified text here, I find it a bit awkward to read and just in terms of appearance it's a bit unsettling with the inconsistent tracking... How does it look just left justified? just something to consider given the subject matter...
I hope something comes out of this for you guys :)

- the design and feel of the blog is deliberately a little 'pedestrian' so it is accessible to non-design types.forcetwelve

It seems challenging to reduce it to type because of the historical context...the serifs instantly seemed appealing because they capture the feeling of old world adventure but can you really use a European typeface with the colonial connotations? On the other hand, a modern face would seem to wipe the slate clean and ignore the history (as the current mark kind of does).
- Just my 2 cents as an ignorant American, I'll get back to work nowukit
- interesting. do you mind if we post this on the blog?forcetwelve
- Yeah that's fine - went ahead and added it inukit

"If the primary challenge in creating place branding is to distill the essence of the specific place into the simplest graphic expression, then is this possible through typography alone? Do we really need simplistic graphic representations or symbols to communicate this essence? Maybe? Maybe not."
I'd say no, it doesn't need distill the essence in the logo or wordmark. More times than not people overburden the logo with all these considerations, but how often do you ever see a logo on it's own, removed completely from it's context? Almost never, save for being in a cluster of sponsor logos on an event poster or the likes. the brand is actually created through everything else, and much more-so by what and how things are said... That's not to say you shouldn't use an apt typeface, but I do think it's not what's going to make or break the brand...
I definitely think you can get away with just a wordmark, but when losing sleep over what type you should use, remember your own pedestrian reference [above note] and most will probably not see the inherent cultural references or designer in-jokes that we associate with type...
You guys are already on the right track with your choices on the blog itself I reckon, the slab seems to work well, that said, I've only met Tasmanians, never been there.. but you seem to be slabby-kind of folk yeah?
