Learning HTML/CSS (it's long overdue that I took this step)
My first project AND my second one look completely shocking in firefox. I knew that this was an issue but I never imagined it to be this bad/frequent!! Is there a blog or something out there with some tips & tricks & do's & don'ts? I'm completely stumped
or share some tips of your own if ya like

most IE rendering quirks are related to the mythical "hasLayout" property, this is a good breakdown of it...

you can avoid box model differences completely by never combining width with padding or margin. give containers width, and elements they contain padding or margin. the only drawback is it sometimes results in needing extra markup.
- nice clean way of saying it....vaxorcist

acescence.. that's exactly the anwer I was after, brilliant!! and the diagram above really makes sense to the "why" of it all. This shows you exactly what level I'm at- we're talking 2 days of learning.. but it's good that I learn this now.
not one tutorial mentions it, and it's such a fundamental problem! in fact, I came across the problem by following a tutvid tutorial >_<

on a side note, i had to screen grab a site yesterday in 12 different browsers to make a point to a client.
Tip : Build in Firefox, get firebug and web dev tool bar.
cross browser check, which I'm glad to see you are doing.a quick note on ie6 would be that its the only (current)browser taht will expand the width of its parent to fit the content and thus breaking the layout.
here are some ie6 bugs :

http://960.gsThey'll be useful aswell 960 has it's own reset stylesheet so you won't need Eric Meyer's css reset but for stuff with pretty unorthodox layouts it's bloody useful.
