In font terms, what's the difference?

in many typefaces compressed = condensed condensed

compressed is even more condensed than condensed, the only thing more condensed than compressed is a black hole

OK. In early 2011, I'm going to come back and ask this very question all over again.

compressed fonts are created through flattening by pressure, squeezed or pressed, whilst condensed fonts are created through a process of extraction or deconstruction.

Oh. What about unsweetened evaporated fonts?

maybe its just me but condensed feels more like it would deal with the tracking/kerning where as compressed would just be a transform tool error. LOL

A compressed font is just a very condensed version. Sometimes called ultra condensed. For example, Univers comes in several different widths, including condensed and ultra condensed (i.e. compressed).
Sometimes it depends on the particular typeface. But there is usually only a compressed version if there is also a condensed version with which the narrower fonts can be compared.
Anyway, here's an example of condensed and compressed (respectively).
