Hi all,
I own a web design company, I currently have a site with a width of 970 pixel, I would like to add some interface stuff to it, it would increase it by 50 pixels, this too wide?
I guess those at 1,024 would get horizontal scrollbars.
Any thoughts?

depends on the audience

How much did you pay for your web design company?

according to this often cited graph:
http://www.w3schools.com/browser…
the majority of monitors display at a resolution higher than 1024x768. However 1024 monitors are still in use by 37% of computer users. Which sounds like a big enough number that I wouldn't want to design something they couldn't view properly.
What is less well known is how these users use their displays. Do they maximize the browser or not? If not, how big do they keep their windows? If so, how much chrome does the browser need?
960 seems to be the magic number. It allows for some chrome, but still uses a pretty good chunk of real estate. More importantly it divides nicely by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 for various column sizes.
- thats only based off visitors to w3schools.com - your audience may vary...estetic
- Someone who owns a 'web design company' should know this.ETM

how does it look on an iPhone?

Like dbloc said, depends on audience. If your audience is the general public, then maybe play it safe and stick to standards. If your audience are folks in the same field as you, like other design shops, then maybe 1024 is too small. Mines at 1165 pixels wide because that's what I think looks good and is a reasonable size on resolutions of 1280 or higher (probably what most designers are using).
Then again, there's always the option of making it work on a variety of resolutions if you're more ambitious.

1020 is just an odd size. Either go after one resolution or the other.

do 1080. its the new 960.
If you know your target group

is 50 pixels really worth it??
If you're going to make it larger than standard, make it MUCH larger. 1020 would look like a mistake.

yep

1020 is enormous -
until standard screen sizes remain at 1024 wide then round about 990 is the very limit you can go with your page width...
