This has to be one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard. I'm guessing Rupert isn't too heavily involved in the day to day decisions over MySpace, Photobucket, Hulu and the other sites he owns.

doesn't this belong in the W T F of the day thread? ;)

It will never work Murd.
- dbloc0
it would be smarter of him to think of something else to have for premium content.

No one will shed a tear on his dying day.

Murdoch added that he did not agree with the idea that search engines fell under "fair use" rules - an argument many aggregator websites use as part of their legal justification for reproducing excerpts of news stories online.
"There's a doctrine called fair use, which we believe to be challenged in the courts and would bar it altogether... but we'll take that slowly."

Just because he made his money in selling fish wrap and TV ads, doesn't mean he is going to be the trailblazer in internet news. Right now the only real money making site he has is WSJ as far as charging for premium content.
And that news outlet can't be compared to most others.

No, I mean beyond charging for news.
He made vague mention of 'other means of broadcasting across the waves'... that, in my mind, implies some eBook wifi device. It's been mooted previously elsewhere that a news subscriber would cost The New York Times less if they were given a Kindle-like eBook rather than a years worth of printed paper matter. It would be interesting to see if there was a mass push in this direction. Even that might be over-complicating things - I could see the benefit in a subscription-like app for iPhone or othersuch mobile device.
Regardless, it's naive to think that all information should come free - there is a huge benefit to editorial and journalism that would be sadly and quickly missed if everything deferred to a wholly advertiser-based news wire model.
I don't really like the guy or his politics, but I do respect him and do agree with his assertion that .. at the very least, things are out of balance.

Rupert is nothing but an old dieing neocon dinosaur with nothing better to do than to sell "war & hate mongering" through his useless antiquated newspapers and reality tv channels.

I wonder though, if news having a future can really be defined as "making as much as they used to." Murdoch made his fortune in the old school world so it's no surprise he wants to revive that...but I don't see how it's possible.

There is news today that another major paper, The Washington Times, is close to closing up shop...
