Seriously how come so many kids coming out of design schools and even a lot of professional designers just suck?
By suck I mean they produce shallow, boring, or just plain awful work.
Its like they don't even try. Does the design industry simply attract underachievers?

Maybe, but what about kids fresh out of school? They've had 4 years to make killer work. Yet a lot of it looks like wannabe Ffffound shit.

All glamour industries do. Look at acting and music.

Nah, most people just simply suck professionally... in general. I doubt the disparity between "suck and unsuck" is tremendously different in design from all other professions.

How many AMAZING designers do you want in the world?
I find it comforting that it's a rare breed

1) Graphic Designers don't read.

Super_black, I think you bring up a fair point.
Most people in all walks of life just do enough to get by. The bare minimum of mediocrity to get the next paycheck.

Design is a profession just like any others. Most people need years of experience to become good at it.
It takes perseverance, stubbornness and the ability to accept – and adapt to – criticism to become good.
It also takes nurturing bosses, colleagues and the right type of educated clients to bring out a designer's potential, and as we are all far too painfully aware, nurturing personalities anywhere on this planet are even more rare than designers who really do work at the top of their game.

Students draw too much influence from design mags, blogs, general trend following (was guilty of this myself) so that in the end the majority of the work looks similiar.
For me, most exceptional designers draw from the wider world- So true... I try to keep myself outta the loop with the current trends & fads. Which may sound like sucide but it's worked for me!necromation

I find it kind of amazing that Graphic Design still doesn't have some kind of guild or qualifications board.
Let's be honest, the AIGA is a figurehead. We have no real quality controls or any sort of cohesion as an industry. (As opposed to something like the WGA)
- ...but we aren't architects. People won't get hurt if we use too much drop shadow.mtgentry
- Honestly, that's debatable...Super_Black

- you want to unionize design?traut
- I'm not sure about the idea of unionizing designers, but I do think there should be some standards in place.Josev
- True, we're not architects, but we do contribute more than we're given credit for. I'm tired of our profession being devalued by designers, you should be supporting the value we offer.Josev

- Designers dont just make album covers and T-shirts, we makes things clear through information design, etc.Josev
- there's no need for a guild. You think writers need a guild? (screenwriters maybe)monNom
