I've never done the resort/all-inclusive type holiday before. Can anyone recommend a good resort in the Mayan Riviera?

It was nice. Make sure you ask for a beach front villa though. it's worth it.
- only down side was that it was so big you need to keep taking these trolly cars everywhere.dropdown

Stayed at the Reef Playacar in Playa del Carmen. Cheaper than the other resorts ($100/day all inclusive when I was there), and much better food than the Iberostar Tucan (friends were staying there at the same time). The beaches are insane there.

I stayed at El Dorado Seaside Suites. It was nice. Only 200 rooms, adults only so no kids running a muck. Good food and chilled out vibe. It's one of the pricier hotels in the area but it's well worth it.

Whatever you do, stay away from the mega 700 room Disneyland style hotels.

In Cozumel, an island 20 mins off the mainland near Playa Del Carmen, and 1 hr from Cancun.Best all inclusive, we ate and drank non stop for 7 days, no one got sick. Great people.

If you're looking for something that isn't all inclusive and super chill check out Al Cielo: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel…
It's small and rustic and situated on what is most likely the best beach in all of the Mayan Riviera.

Stayed here for our honeymoon. http://www.sunsetprincessresort.…
We've done all-inclusives in the caribbean before, and this was hands-down our favourite. Go.
Also, be sure to get out of the resorts while you're there. Playa Del Carmen has a neat tourist strip, and there's a snorkeling park called Xel Ha (Shell Ha) that is pretty neat.
The best tour we did while there was a total ramshackle operation. It was called Emilio's Aquatic adventure. Basically just a guy with a big van came and picked us up and took us to some really awesome spots to go snorkeling.
