Anyone have any info on this? Not on how to make them, just whether they are allowed and if there are any specific criteria for creating app icons that are non-standard shapes.
I have a log I'm trying to fit into the standard app icon area and would prefer not to confine it to a rounded box.
Looked around but can't find any specific info.

nope your stuck in a rounded box I'm afraid (you submit a square image and apple applies the rounded masking), the springboard would look horrible if they didn't enforce this on developers because you'd have people who don't know how to make transparent images just sending in white square backgrounds, you'd have people rolling their own rounded corners etc

I, for one, have no information for you.

How are things back home going, Stimmers?

The Local Concerts app looks like it has a transparent bg but I'm guessing it's just the rounded box behind it in black.

Hmmm, the Local Concerts app got away with it, but those types of icons are few and far between. Maybe you supply the flat jpeg/tiff and get a choice of overlays (border, reflection, etc.)?
Things are going good, thanks for asking! My little trip to Scotland did wonders for my sanity. Gonna stick around here though I think, see what happens. No point giving up everything I've worked so hard for.

I've not been involved in the submitting process, but from what I understand having designed the graphics for several iphone apps, is that the choice is yours whether you want to slap the apple rounded, highlight stuff on it or not. I've also been submitting PNG 24s which could certainly handle the transparency so I don't see why not. Never tried it.

You can't do it. You submit a squared logo and Apple makes the rest. You don't have a choice. In top of that if you submit an icon with the format Apple don't like, they'll reject the whole app.

it's not a coincidence that 70000 out of 70000 app logos have the same format.

I have a bunch of apps installed that don't have a rounded shape, but maybe they just have a black background and seem to be transparent...

There is a property to specify weather you have applied the highlight to the application icon or not, of which this app has set to true and made its background black.
