Can anyone think of a service/product that used to be free, but then one day it became a paid-service? I'm just wondering if there is any historical precedence that this can be compared to.

Had an interesting conversation with my father-in-law to-be this afternoon, about how "now the government totally controls the Internet, because they want to control the news you see just like they do over in China, and be able to track everything you do on the web..." I countered the second point with "well, they're already doing that or have the technology to," and as for the first one, well, he's a strong Republican/conservative totally against the current president, so what do I say to that? Do people really believe that this new regulation is in place to somehow, eventually, control the news we have access to over the web at a governmental level?
