i become a father in november and i am sooo proud and very happy & excited. when it comes to work, it just sucks. i am surrounded by guys without relationships.
i announced my fatherhood in may, and my boss failed, to search a proper replacement for me from mid november to end of december and i will work for 80% from january 2010. we discussed all this back then, and he was ok with that.
fact today is, that i turned to the studios "issue" because i am the only art director/designer here and am treated like i betrayed everyone here.
so wtf? did u have the same issues? what should i say to the boss and my coworkers?

Agree to timetable but ask for a raise and a paid summer off.

Family first. Staffing firms can find a sufficient temp art/director to fill your temporary void.
Do they have a paternity plan there?

Seems like a long time off. I took off a whopping week.

get some kid in there, show him the ropes, take your time off, and be prepared to have to compete with him when you come back.

Do you do things in your own, unique way? If a new person is hired, they may get very confused, call you all the time, and/or re-invent their own way of doing things, so when you come back you have to re-orient things alot....

the thing that makes me angry, or better sad, is the fact that i am now responsible for a fail in managing the business.

I got two weeks paid.
FYI the U.S. is one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to paternity leave. Our workaholism and lack of respect for the family unit is appalling.

I got two weeks, and took three. I'm in the same position - the sole Art Director here. They'll cope. They'll talk disasters and doom and apocalypse, but they'll cope.

i took a week off when my son was born (a year ago in august) ... but then this spring i took 3 months off (part of a governmet program. the gov paid for 70% of my pay). Everyone at the agency thought it was great for me and nobody complained. Slightly different situation though, lots of hands to fill in for me.

So you had an agreement way back in May, and he still has a month to find someone?
Why is anyone freaking out?

Unreal ... I'm in shock all of you got so many days off! I have never had more than 2 days off when any of my kids were born. I wish I could give you some advice, but I really don't have any. I do know that I'd like to work a job with better hours. As it is now, I don't get off work until 6:00-6:30 everyday. My family is eating dinner while I drive home and then I get home just in time to get the kids bathed and tucked into bed.

I'm self employed so I took 4 days off and then had to get back to work because you get fuck all if you're self employed.
